The new 2.0 tdi's are actually very reliable. My good friend has a jetta sport wagon tdi and already has like 60k miles. He beats the crap out of it and has had no issues what so ever. He also flashed it (motor&dsg), dpf delete (downpipes will eliminate this).
Oh and when we went to h20i '10. It took us only two full tanks to get there (from south florida to ocean city, md). Something like 12xx miles.
