I've got new head, pistons, piston rings, bearings, and of course every gasket in between. Just wondering what oil weight I should use for the break in period?
I'm going to start up the engine for the first time later today. I live in Vegas so it's a little warmer, with the temperatures ranging from 48-68(F) today. Normally I'd run 20W-50 pretty much year round, but I hear that 10W-40 is a good oil weight to use, and it's probably not a good idea to run a thick oil, for the break in? I bought a 5 gallon jug of Castrol GTX non-sythetic hoping to fit the bill for the first few hundred miles. According to the Bentley though, that weight has a temperature range of -20 to 50(F)
Should I return it and try to find a different weight? Such as 10W-50 (rated to 70 degrees) or 15W-40(rated to 90 degrees)? Or are these weights too thick?
Also to the mods, I'm not really sure if this thread should be in the m20 section, or somewhere else entirely. I'd appreciate it if you move this where you see fit. Thanks!
