if you look hard, you can find a good m50 that doesn't need rebuilding for 5-600 bucks. i don't know how you could do it much cheaper than that. if you find one out of an e34, they you only need motor mount arms, some wiring, and exhaust.

at least you won't have to pound the fire wall in with a sledge.

with his horsepower goals, he would need to start with an s50/52. by the time cams, maf, injectors, and tune were figured in on the m50, it is much cheaper to drop an m30 in.

You seem to be misinformed. You can pick up a good m30 for $200-$300 if you search and depending on the motor mounts you go with, you won't have to massage the firewall.

You forgot to mention that the m30 weighs 50 tons more and is outdated technology, like the typical 24v advocate.

The M30B35 is no more outdated than the M20B25.
Less complicated and less moving parts than the M50 and stock it makes more power. And it weighs about the same. And it looks cool.

...and you get that rawness of a 12v engine. M30s are just raw, like sandpaper on skin.

I can get 23+ mpgs highway but average about 20mpg combined. With a MAF and tune you can make almost 200whp:

M30s came in everything so parts are cheap. Looks nice. Period correct. Fun to drive. Can't go wrong really.

If I didn't want an M30 before, I'm sold on one after seeing that dyno chart now

To echo what everyone else has said, the torque-curve of an M30 in the E30 chassis is A LOT of fun.

It just looks correct in there....even more so than an M20.

The m30 is meant to be in the e30. After all, Gods Chariot is powered by an m30.

What other costs am I looking at? Will I need a different transmission and custom driveshaft? I have a 2.93:1lsd now, would I be wasting the horsepower gains by not going to a 3.73 or a 4.10? I'm sure these are noob questions, but I want to get all my ducks in a row before I start this.

The extra torque the M30 puts out should make using a higher gear ratio fine. Might need to step up to a 3.25? *i don't have personal experience with it

Also, I am serious about buying my motor and trans. I will even throw in the driveshaft. Ready made swap kit

I would love to pick up your motor and trans. It's a great deal, however I won't have the money untill later this summer. I'm just starting the research process now. If you still have it around, I'll deffinitly hit u up.

I have an m30 with a 2.93 differential and it's very nice. Definitely fast enough and the long gears are great for both around down and highway since you can go faster in each gear. The m30 works great with lower gear ratios because it makes good torque at low rpm.

If I may hijack for a sec... according to the interwebs both the B34 and B35 are 3.4L, is this correct?

85e325, if I were you I'd start as early as possible trying to find a nice M30. The B34 was last make in ~1988, so it'll take a while to find one that hasn't been to pluto and back. Unless you're 100% certain of the maintenance history, I'd be giving it a freshen up (gaskets etc) before throwing it in.
