On a serious note though, i'm pretty sure your comparison only applies in a question of "should I put coolant into my radiator or leave it dry?"
True, let me rephrase "Of course its not necessary, you could run olive oil instead of engine oil, it all depends if you want a car that runs for a few years vs who the hell knows."

Long story short, we ran the engine without oil until it started to make some noise, then pulled the pan and took pictures of the single spec of bearing material we got to show up. It took a lllloooonnnggg time to get it to do any real damage.
On top of that, I have seen an old Chevy 350 get run for about an hour before the tech realized there wasn't any oil in it. Company parts truck so no one cared. We topped off the oil and never had an issue.
Engines are pretty tough as long as you take care of them.

Ever heard of the rice burner melt down. Drain all fluids from an engine and put a brick on the gas pedal. Then write down how long you think it will last. Closest to the actual time wins a prize. Usually done with Hondas, but a local air-cooled VW groups locally used a Toyota one year.
It ran for over an hour and twenty minutes. Made all kinds of noise. It was ridiculous.1974.5 Jensen Healey : 2003 330i/5
