I just recently picked up an E46 330i sedan and I'm quite pleased with it. Only problem is that I don't get to drive it; my woman does and it's comfortable, safe, and a hell of a lot easier on gas than my Navigator could ever be.

I still drive my E30 and honestly, it's not that bad on gas. Just don't do jackrabbit starts from stop lights and be more conservative.

To put it into perspective, watch the clip from Top Gear where Jeremy Clarkson has a Prius and an M3 go around the track. In the end he says, "Don't change your car, just change your driving habits". I couldn't agree more with what he said.
I've seen that episode and I did think it was very interesting. I was just wondering what other people thought. I am not stictly looking at gas mileage, cause if that was the case then I would get a honda or hyundai or something. I am simply talking about a good middle ground. its looking like 2L cars are the way to go. I really do like my dad's 03 saab 9-3 though. That is a pretty cool car.

If you like the saab ask to trade cars for a week as sort of an extended test drive. If you like it, look into it. If you don't, there are other options. If you are doing this mostly to save money on gas I don't think you will actually end up saving much in the long run. Keep the e30, drive it like grandma, and save money to improve it down the road

How about we stick a low miles, OBD1 S50 or M52 in that super clean 'vert of yours? :) :) :) You'll get excellent mileage from it.

I don't understand why people have lists on R3v of "what should i buy" then include the E30 in the list. Obviously people are going to be partial to it, this is an E30 board.

The op kind of confused us and had a budget that could cover a more modern car.

what the fuck is wrong with people?
MOST people couldnt tell the difference between FWD and RWD if it kicked them in the ass!
                Buncha damned bench/computer seat racers

....Integra Type R is FWD and with a good driver DESTROYS people at the track

for a daily driver id rather have a FWD or AWD vehicle to deal with all kinds of weather conditions that present themselves

youre in college, you obviously want a car thats fun and looks good... seems like with what you mention your budget is about 5,000ish gove or take

id recommend (things that can be found for 5k)
                99-00 civic Si modded
240sx with an s20 and s15 or silvia front end
                lsvtec integra
eclipse GSX/Talon Tsi (DESTROYS e30s in every way possible)
                1998 z28 camaro or transam (non ws6)

options are out there.... and most get about 25ish MPG

just because people are being bench racers and hating on FWD doesnt mean it isnt good for what you're wanting, in your current situation.

........ive got an ITR now witha GT35r that would like to have a word with ANYONE who says FWD cant hang

edit: also most girls dont like e30s..... they look old and crapped out... stick with a DSM or a JDM car of some sort

...I can find an rsx, mk4 gti, saab 9-3, e30, and even an a4 for the price i listed previously. My dad just picked up his 9-3 with 65k miles in a 5-speed for $5,300...I dont know what your talking about

I agree with the first portion of your post. Unless you are trying to drift or race, fwd and rwd isn't actually that big of a difference during normal dd conditions. However, your assumption of price range is wrong. I am working part time during the year, and full time during the breaks. Thank you for trying to reconfigure my budget though

I just said if you have that much money go for something more modern.

Another nice one to look for is the lexus is 250

But I think you have a very good idea with the saab 9 3 or even an older 900 I have seen a lot of those sell for next to nothing lately when the company went under.

Worth looking at in the mix. Saabs have lots of manuals, good gas mileage good suspension.

I had a mkiv gfi and it was a fine car, great hwy cruiser, but in terms of driver enjoyment , the 318is kills it! Plus, I can work on the e30, the gti was just way too complicated and service and repairs are costly.

I had a RSX type S before the M3. I went through my ricer stage and had Honda emblems instead of Acura...

It was a great car, but I would have taken a E30 over it any day... And I did. They require premium if I remember correctly, and aren't GREAT on gas.

ooo. I thought you were talking about how this wouldn't be able to get a modern car. However, I don't think I could find an is250 for this price range. I would have to take out a loan. that would be sweet though

Really?? I was leaning towards the mk4 gti lately too...

                              THIS.

I am affraid that I may be entering my "ricer stage" by getting a japanese fwd car (honda or acura) haha. All rsx's require premium gas? Thats kinda dumb. I like the styling of the rsx's quite a bit.

If you're driving on the street, you shouldn't be in situations that RWD really matters. You can barely rotate a 318is with the throttle. IMO the M42 is a timebomb waiting to blow up in your face.

If I had a budget of up to $9000, I'd get as close to an unmolested E36 M3 all day long. As long as you don't lead foot it you can get 26 mpg highway.

But out of your choices, the RSX seems to be the best choice.
