If we're talking mr2's now, why not an AP1 S2000? If you drive ultra-mega-conservatively you get 36ish mpg, bitches will love it and an AP1's are hovering around 10k...

if there is a regular spot to pick up s2000s for under 10k it still doesnt quite qualify for something affordable enough for the op.

cars are just a slippery slope its always just a little more for something way better.

if you spend 12k for that why not get a boxster lol or a z4.
Im not sure why but I think a mr2 still qualifies as economical and an s2000 is a bit more expensive.

I live in a very cheap used car market and Ive never seen an s2000 for less than 12k. Theyre really awesome though.
