    Grey market Baur 318i.

Found this in my Highschool. Guy has had it since new (1986). Guy graduated from my high school in '82.
His father bought it from a doctor who imported 5 of them.

Part of the federalization process was to swap in an MPH speedo, DOT headlights, catalytic conveter and that little unleaded fuel only sticker. In the 80s it was relatively cheap and easy for an importer to bring in any car they wanted. But the conversion was often half assed. For example the car was also supposed to receive DOT bumpers (diving boards). The feds caught on and shut down the gray market around 88 or 89. There was also an exchange rate advantage to importing your own car back then.

This car does not have a cat (:)) And the side markers were very well placed, as you can see in the pics they are under the bumpers on the valence.

Why would anybody in the UK buy a LHD Baur? The MPH speedo was added after it arrived in the US.

If, for whatever reason there was a LHD British market Baur imported, it would have come with a MP/H cluster. England uses MP/H for speed signs; I can't speak for anywhere else in Europe, though.

Custom ordered by that doctor? According to the owner, the doctor who bought them, bought 5 identical ones.
                          The owner did say England.
