$7k would nab a nice, maintained E46 325i. I picked up my wife's 02 325i 5spd 3 years ago for $7500 and it was very nice.. still is. So you might even be able to score an E46 330i for that much just be sure you get maintenance records and the cooling system maintenance is up to date.
As for an E36 $7k is now M3 territory or an extremely clean / mint 328is.

Don't listen to conceited baby Vivek.
As much as we, as R3V'ers are obligated to hate e36s, they are decent cars for what they are.
True, I'd much rather prefer a bone stock e30 than a e36, but they're okay if one's really set on getting a more modern daily.
Just throw a m3 front bumper cover on, and you are golden.
