What do most shops charge for a auto to 5 speed conversion
Getting a shop to do it is overrated. I did it myself with little to no knowledge of transmissions with nothing but a Writeup and all it cost me was 2 days and $500 in swap parts.
Hey guys my buddy found a clean e30 but auto and was wondering what a shop would charge for a 5 speed swap.
Thanks.
Just ball park number would be good
Depends how easily they will find the parts. Clutch R&R + Master cylinder installation should be it in terms of labor.. maybe 9-10ish + parts (used and new)

If people can't fix an e30 themself, it is because they are freakin lazy, have no balls, and lack testosterone. Period.
Either that, or you can rule yourself in with the 1%ers who truly have no time and would rather spend their "car repair time" launching their Lambo's into Doriftos and taking out 2 cars in the process...

Reason: I AM ZE GRAMMAR NAZI!
Some people just can't/won't do anything. There was one guy that wanted to buy my car one time and he probably couldn't change a VC gasket himself. OP, is he in socal? If so PM MR 325 because I think he and Myster-E do mechanical stuff.
The other thing to consider is some people work A TON. Maybe he doesn't have the time to do it himself...

Honestly I built it just to have a place to sit and listen to Hotline Bling on repeat.
i work 2 jobs and go to school so i have no time to help him out,
he was just curious on cost ballpark
he can wrench, he helped me work on my rear wheel bearings he has time issues.
I charge R+R flywheel plus R+R clutch master plus two hours for pedels/electrical/miscellaneous. Comes out to about 10 hours per Alldata, about 12 if you use Mitchell.
And I always insist in a new clutch assembly, all new hydraulics, new mounts/guibo, new seals in the trans and fresh bushings for the shifter.
Yeah, then if time constraints are an issue.. (You don't have 2 free days.. Really?) you'd be looking at close to $100 per hour mechanic fees.
It took me 16 hours total (not counting snags/screw ups along the way) with no mechanical experience. A mechanic can probably have it done in 10-12. My guess, is if your doing it right, you'll be dropping at least $500 for the parts and at least $1000 for labor.
Expect to pay $1500-$2000.
Or hire a bud to help you out for $100-$200, and if he's really nice, he'll do labor for labor, take time off and wait for the semester to be over like I did (it took me 4 months to finally do my swap after getting all my parts because I never had time myself. Patience is a virtue ;)), and only end up dropping $750 max for everything.
Maybe I'm just biased cause I actually did the swap myself though..
The flat rate would probably be a bit more than called for in a clutch replacement. On an E30 I'd guess that to be about 6-8hr of labor. Local rates would be needed to translate that into dollars.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

@OP, I personally charge 650(labor) for the swap(pedals swap too) Takes 30 for the pedals and 3hrs for the swap(out/in hooked up) depends on the auto flywheel, some bolts are bitches. I spend about 30mins cleaning casing/swapping tranny seals before install.

lolwat?
My brother is an insane gear head, has ZERO desire to do more than: wheel swap, oil and other upkeep, stereo work and detail. He loves to get in and cruise. Same with my Sister, she loves the designing and buying parts and little stuff. But really has no desire to swap her b25 that I am doing.
My little brother on the other hand begged me to sneak him into the junk yard to pull engines with me and walked 2 miles to the shop at 2am to do a b25/5spd swap. He does not even own an e30 yet. It is called DESIRE to do something, or you have to do it because you cannot afford a mechanic.
Ever think some people just want too hop in and drive? Because there is NOTHING wrong with that.
Funny how you labeled everyone lazy or no balls, or rich/moronic. I think you're Dbag% now get the fuck off your high horse Mr. Elitist DIY lol
