Uh-oh. Yeah, do a swap lol.
The headaches of a turbo system not working properly + diagnosis could potentially leave you unmotivated and pissed beyond belief.

Like your OP stated; you probably answered your own question.

This would be an undeniable Turbo M20 response from me, if it weren't California....fucking CARB is bullshit.

Anyway, I'd go M52 + M3 cams and boost it, if that is CARB legal at all....

I'm surprised at all the turbo votes.
        I'm curious as to why....

My guess is that the turbo voters are just looking from the speed and power aspect. Even I kinda brought this up when you were doing your oil pan and you didn't care about the legality because the power outweighed the drawbacks. What made you change your mind?
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

Here is the plan. Register your car in Tuolumne County, Turbo your car, then Break your hood release cable. That way when you get pulled over and the cop tells you to open your hood, you can show him it won't open :) Then just use a screwdriver to pop your hood for oil changes and such
Note: No Bi-Annual in Tuolumne County ;)

It's not even all about the power/speed. It's just way more fun.
It makes you smile a lot more than a swap, even if whatever NA motor put in there is faster.

wow, cali must suck in that aspect...here in Virginia they dont really care what you do to your car as long as you dont have underglow and they can see thru your windows
may you rest in peace, or pieces, whichever comes first

Ive always liked the N/A powerband better... Drove some turbo cars and I wasn't really a fan; Lag was there, but wasn't the inherent flaw and didnt distract enough from the joy of driving the car. I loved hearing the turbo spool down everytime I turned the car off though :-D

Honestly, N/A is just, and will always be, my preference unless it comes from the factory turboed

Me personally.. I just want to toss an S54 in my beast, go like bullets, and be done with it

if your swap budget allows for S54, then do that.
if you are on a money constraint and want something fast to hoon and need a daily; sell all excess parts (i.e the built m20 you don't want to pay to install and boost) and buy a beater E36M3. it already has a s52 inside it and costs about as much as built M20. e36M3 has no issues with the engine fitting properly in the bay also, 24V e30 swaps usually fit like poop inside the engine bay.
                              OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Z4 non powered steering rack fits e30

                              Euro e46 2005/6 320d 6mt gearbox into E30 with M20 hardy and beck 1985 327s engine

S54 i think is out of the question.
What does a s54 cost these days?

Buying another e36 m3 has been a consideration too! I miss mine :(

                                Thanks for your opinion :)
