    I was duped!

Hey all, I have a sad story to tell today. My first e30, my '325i' coupé just went for its first service under my ownership, and he told me some very bad news. The car was sold as a 325i, with the badges and the approval from the owner, but it is in fact a 320i. I had never driven an e30 before so I couldn't tell the difference, but I saw a thread on bf that confirmed it. The battery is in the front, not the back, and the power kicks in at 4000 revs just like he said.

I've emailed the previous owner, looking for some answers, but I'm not sure I'll get anything. I'm just so bummed :/

      ^this first

Badge switching seems to be a regular thing over here... I've seen quite a few sale ads recently and finally get to the bottom line and it says "Car is 320i badged as 325"..who knows how many don't actually state it.
      Bummer dude.
      I have an Auto 320i though -_-

Happened to me almost exact same story. My e30 had 325is badges and everything and PO swore that it was a 325is. I had never been in an e30 so I didn't know the tach would give away that it was a 325e instead. I was bummed but looked at the production date and it turns out mine ended up being a SETA. So disappointed but not upset.

I know hey, chevy badges everywhere. Worst. The difference between this and those ads is that all the way through it was assured that it was a 325i, even after checking the VIN and seeing otherwise. He seemed like a nice guy so I believed him. So either he was fooled too, or he's going to get some shit soon.

Yeah! See, looking for stuff like that never occurred to me to research. Obviously I can tell now, but I just never thought about it. In the US it doesn't matter as much because e30s are all like $2. In Australia they're expensive as crap. I thought I got a deal getting a 325i for 7k, but it turns out I got shafted.

And that's exactly what I feel like right now. I feel I didn't do enough research, that he's just laughing at me and counting his money.

You would be surprised what you can pick up e30 wise in Aus now compared to a few years ago, prices have actually come down alot if you keep your eyes out for people who arent dreaming... On the other hand, US prices havent really changed much recently...

I picked up an Alpine II 1990 325i Alpine II 2door with M50B25 swap, LSD, pretty much every option (even headlight adjust!) minus sunroof (sunroof = rust), mtech bits and pieces with 160k km on chassis, 130k km on motor and great paint for $10k.

If you look at places like carsales there are people wanting 10k+ for a stock 325i.....

Well congrats to you I suppose.

Yes, everyone is dreaming because they think because it's a BMW it never depreciates. There's a smashed up 318i for 1100 on there right now. wtf.

but yeah, good for you getting a good deal. I got a bad deal.

There wouldn't be much you would need to make your 320i as good or better than a 325i. You have a 731 head with motronic (not ljet like the 323i) so you could go and pick up a 325e 2.7L bottom end and run a chip with bigger injectors.... Would have comparable power to a 325i and more torque.

The 320i has a small diff (6 bolt), but you can basically change in any e30 diff you want (theres lots of open diffs available for cheap in AUS - if you want an LSD go US ebay)

Brakes are the same, probably a few less features in the car but not much that will actually change your driving experience.
