any engine swap(not BAR'd) in Cali is illegal on a car that is not pre. smog.

and yes if you keep all the stock stuff when swapping it should be very easy to get it BAR'D

- but most people don't and i am sure cops have seen newer bmws and spend plenty of time of forums like these to see what slick things and ideas we have for trying to get around them. don't take every cop for stupid

iirc someone got their hood popped with a 24v and the cop only gave him shit for the cone filter, I guess he didnt know any better

Forgot to put any swap other than stock is illegal. ^^ sound reasonable. m30/m50/s50 look like a stock install anyway. I'm pretty sure if the cop popped your hood and found a v8 or boost he'd be like,"aww he'll naw." Btw boost is illegal in factory NA cars

Im not to worried about getting ref'ed because the first and only time a cop asked me to pop the hood, at least on my e30, he didn't know it comes up from the windshield.

needless to say i sat and watched him struggle for a minute or two.

I've had my hood popped on my Nissan Titan (sent to the ref), my zinno e30 the day I bought it, and currently my alpine e30 S50 swapped twice so far. They DO know the difference lol, especially the car enthusiast (and yes, they are out there) so my BAR sticker has saved me twice so far. I usually just try to play dumb..."what's a cone filter sir? I was with a buddy few years back. We got pulled over for speeding at 5am out in OC , however we had both been drinking. my frnd was under age but wasn't over the limit , i was of age but 3 times the limit. Anyways cop popped the hood for no reason and didn't say shit. The car was a b16 swapped integra , looked stock besides some slipstream and a clean drop ( no rice )
Got a ticket for the car to get reffed. Long story short , the cop had no reason to pop the hood and the ref referral was dismissed.

But this shows that cops will pop your shit with out asking or looking like they know. CHP btw

A cop would not know if you put an M50 in if you kept it clean and oem looking with a stock airbox.
