    Driving Germany's Autobah!

That's right, I'm going to drive the autobahn. So I'm going to Germany next Monday (first time in Europe ever!) for a study abroad program through my school. I'll be studying German at the University of Freiburg and I am planning on driving cars around on one of the weekends.

Question is... What is the best way to drive on the autobahn? Where do I rent the cars? I would really like to drive any generation m3...but a lambo would be fine as well! I know of http://www.dfwdriveyourdream.com/2000hp_cars.php but is there anything cheaper?!

    Thanks!

Hertz, Avis have plenty of fun cars to rent. Are you 25 yet? some places will not allow you to rent under 25.

I was going to say, most places you have to be 25 to rent.

I did a similar exchange in Braunschweig. The only place that rented a car to me (under 25) was enterprise, it was like an additional 10 euro per day, for young driver tax or some bs... Its really not all that exciting after like 5 min. Also 2 things to keep in mind:

            1) Not all of it is unrestricted, only the sections that have a circle with some lines through it.
2)NEVER, NEVER, NEVER stay in the left lane unless you are ripping it. If you see headlights behind you and you are in the left lane, change ASAP.

            Edit:

Oh forgot to mention, hazard lights on the car in front mean traffic is slowing down, don't ignore that.

Also, Autobahn is nothing more than our highway....there isn't just one autobahn. As mentioned already, drive in the right lane, pass on the left. Once you pass, get back to the right.

Polizei don't necessarily chase/pull cars over. They have speed cameras/traps everywhere, so be mindful of the speeds.

Also if you happen to be on the left lane and see a car behind you with the left blinker on, move over ... he wants to pass you.

                  fixed

Also, if you use your rear fog lights (99% of cars in Europe have them) MAKE SURE to shut them off as soon as the weather clears. Drivers get REALLY cheesed when you dont' shut them off when the weather clears
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

                    - you can rent from sixt (cheaper)
                    - you cannot rent an M3 from anybody, they all rent normal cars
                    - do not hang out in the left lane
                    - ALWAYS check your mirrors before moving into the left lane. a car @ 260kph comes up fast when your doing 120kph
                    - left turn blinker from the car behind you when your in the left lane means your a dumbass
                    - flashing high beams from the car behind youwhen your in the left lane means your a gigantic dumbass

Woops! I clearly neglected reading that site I posted. As you can see, I am in dire need of help :(
ANYWAY, thanks for all the driving tips! I will definitely take note of all these if I ever do get the chance to drive on it...
Unfortunately, I am under 25. So... I'm guessing enterprise won't have any fun cars? Honestly, I just want to be able to floor a sporty car without worrying about any cops. I won't be driving incredibly stupid, but I would like to get up to ~120mph and see how it feels (a sporty car is preferred... taking a Toyota Camry up to 120mph does not sound too exciting.

I did about 120 or so in a 6 speed turbo diesel Pathfinder. It wasnt really all that thrilling but hey, I did what I could

Driving on the autobahn is cool but its just a straight road. My favorite part about it was people actually driving proper and staying the fuck out of the left lane. Going 150mph in a straight line is not as much fun as you think. You need to try to get to the nurburgring.

Actually, you can rent an M3 fro BMW On Demand in Munich. I went down there a couple months back and rented an M5 for a few hours. It's nice because the autobahn from Munich to Garmisch is unrestricted most of the way...To rent an M3 is fairly cheap ( 45Euro/hour I believe), but if you scratch anything you are going to PAY! Plus Garmisch/Munich area is awesome... BTW, the M5 is the single most amazing vehicular experience I have ever had.
