7k tach in euro 85 eta?

okay so i am looking to buy this 85 325e the 2nd owner (claims) under 80k orginal miles.he also claims it was imported from the 1st owner. long story short the car has everything in u.s spec except euro bumpers and valance.my concern is that the tach in the car is not the orginal which say 78XXX ,the reason i have this concern is its a 7k tach? the shop that bought the car has maintained the car from 1990 and says he has paper work proving the mileage?i also confronted or asked the man about the (I) tach and he said its been that way sence he has known the car. advise?

Get in car, see if revs to 7k.

Sounds I-swapped and swapped back for sale.

Are you paying a premium for the car because its low miles? Generally speaking low miles on cars this old dont matter too much anyway. Time degrades parts regardless of miles. Any rubber or gaskets need to be replaced and any internals should be fine if oil was changed and the car wasn't abused. To me, 80k and 160k on a 27 year old car have little difference.

well a test drive will be the next step .and i am most certain the car has not been swaped.and as far as mileage goes how can you relate years of sitting or being used very little and high miles? low mileage mean less wear on internals and of course i understand the hoses and what will all need changed.

Well, it came from Europe, being a BMW, but it's a US spec car with Euro goodies. I'd probably buy it for the Euro goodies regardless.

okay so this woman could have had the car brought from europe? just trying to figure out wats tru and whats not before i make the purchase.is it a forsure yes that the tach has been changed? the car needs paint body work ,seats, dash, and lots of other odds and ends for 3k .so the main reason i would get it ,would be for the mileage and euro bumpers.

Lol, when i bought my eta, it had a 325i cluster. The po had no idea about e30s so i told him the car has problems and it wont rev higher then 4250. I bought the car for about the same price as a bag of chips.

Because the common thing to fail on these cars arent the internals, its gaskets, hoses, blets, etc which are all affected by age. Hence why you see 300K+ e30's still alive, because the internals are bullet proof if the car is maintained.

I mean its your money, but paying a premium for a low miles 27 year old non rare car when engines are literally 300-500 dollars seems silly to me.
