Hes saying one E30 isnt really better than another as far as reliability its just a matter of preference

Depending on your preference, some people like the 88's and up because you can have the plastic bumpers where as everything before had the metal diving board bumpers. The 87-91 325i/is is more fun to drive in my opinion because you dont feel like your holding up traffic sometimes trying to get up to speed.
QFT. Typed exactly what I would have written.

...Definitely most important when choosing any car, especially one of 20+ years.

There's no major problems that certain years/motors will have and other e30's wont.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

There are some I think the biggest one is the fuel pump with the older model is less reliable.

The IACV with the etas is more reliable though Ive never heard of that go bad.

older e30s can have drum brakes in the back those are less reliable.

          in general newer is better.

Serious talk; get a Honda civic, you will have less issues to deal with, if you spend 2k on purchasing one of those.

I would gather more fund to find clean, well maintained car..

For first year of owning my e30 I didn't spend anything on repairs except general maintenance items (filters, plugs etc). Major service like timing belt & water pump was done before I bought it.
