Its because M is motorsport. Convertible version of a coupe car is not motorsport.

By that definition the only m cars are the m1, m3 and z4m. Everything else is some marketing scheme to steal your money.

            1. Okay ranking by decade is just silly.
            2. The M1 was failure that nearly bankrupted the company, never raced (which is what it was built for) and wasn't even built by BMW.

            Most importantly
            3. putting the m coupe over the e39 m5 is just blasphemy. The m5 e39 was the best m car period! I know about all the e30 accolades, and it was and still is a great race car and is number 2. But when the e39 m5 came out it was insane and unheard for a car to comfortably seat 4 passengers, haul a set of golf clubs around and be faster than Lamborghini's of its day. It was hailed as the greatest car of all time. In my opinion its the reason why Cadillac makes a v series, Infiniti makes an ipl, Lexus makes an f. This was the beginning of this huge trend of manufactures making cars like BMW. Every manufacturer whats this "m" car.

Edit: oh and to put anything from the 80's over an e30 is even worst blasphemy.

the e39 m5 is personally my favorite m car, and i agree it inspired the cts-v and numerous other competitors, but i don't think it's the greatest m car of all time. the m1 is the one to start it all, the e30 m3 has the largest cult following by far, and the e28 marked the beginning of the super sedan.

and to rook12v, M stopped being about motorsport as soon as they started building the m5 back in the 80's. now they just build hopped up daily drivers for yuppies.

I hate e39's but there is no way there's another m car that is greater or ever will be greater (competition is to stiff now). M1 was failure I don't see why so many of you guys get behind it. What I think is so pathetic about it is that they wanted to build a race and they went to a company that didn't even race to have them build it (lamborghini). E30 was an excellent racer (not road car) and those cosworth guys will swear the merc was better. You have a valid point with the super sedan e28, as fast as a 911 etc. But upon its release (and that's the only way we can compare them) there was no denying that the e39 m5 shocked the the automotive world like no other m car has or will. There was absolutely nothing that could compare.

It doesn't matter if a car is a failure or not sales wise when its launched, history tends to favor the bold. The coolest cars, failure or otherwise, are the ones that try to do something different. The M1 was a ballsy move by BMW. Like you mentioned, it was so ballsy it almost bankrupted the company. It was so ballsy it was a bad decision. There would be no supercars if not for poor decision making and balls.

I think the Z3M coupe edged out the M5 because of coolness. The article addresses that.

Coolness are you fucking serious! The Z3 is a greater m car because its cool? Of course its cooler this is exactly why the e39 is greater. It wasn't based on some limited shooting brake style design where things like balance and weight distribution could be put above all, its based on an old hum drum e39 chassis. This is car that a man with 2 kids can live with daily. Do you understand?

And i'm not talking about a sales failures, fuck sales. The m1 was designed to compete group 4/5 racing and it never did. Supercars exist because manufactures wanted to race and they had to homologate road cars. Winning races=pedigree=sales. Supercars make sense, there called halo's. Nissan GTR's, Ford GT's etc.

Of course not, that was the beginning of the supercar (Race car sold to public) like the gt40. In this day and age there used as halo's and with zonda's tipping 2 mil profit makers. I was just trying to explain to ///M coupe ni6 that supercars aren't derived from " poor decision making and balls." Surely if you re-read my comment you can take that away.

Nope they definitely did by putting an e28 over it.

The list in general is cute, but silly cause you can't truly compare cars built for such different purposes. Having said that my top two would be the e39 M5 & the e30 M3. They completely dominated the huge markets they were created for and are actually still competitive within them today. Two such drastically different cars with different purpose though... I have no clue how you can pit the success of one against the other.
