    M42 heads are notorious for warping and cracking between the water jackets when they've been overheated substantially. Shutting any engine down when it gets near the red should be a no brainer, but it is especially important on these guys. Also, one more point to mention, the profile gaskets were garbage from the factory and their replacements aren't much better...so chances are the engine will need at least its (third) profile gasket done.

      even after building a 24v e30, the 318is was still far and away my favorite e30.
