I did pull the trunk lining and couldn't find any sign of the repair. I'm positive it is an 88 that was killed from behind. The fact that it was fixed with early model parts really doesn't bother me that much. I don't mind the early tail lights, and I have the resources to do what Janderson did on his early to late rear valance conversion if I feel the need to.

Resale doesn't concern me too much for this car. To this point, the cars I've bought have been bought as temporary DD's until I could find a nicer one (with the exception of my ix.) This one is nicer than all of them and feels better to drive than all of them, enough so that I'm planning on keeping this one long term. It seems to have been repaired properly, even if it was with the "incorrect" parts. The way I see it, repairing it with e30 parts isn't going to change the car besides the appearance. As long as everything feels right while driving it, I'm not worried if it looks a little different.

It seems like you're really trying to defend/rationalize this purchase. Personally, I think something fishy is up with it and I'd hold out for another e30. But go ahead Romeo, do your thangg.
Before I went to see the car, the opinions of all you guys were helpful and kept my expectations realistic. After checking it out in person and driving it, I'm confident enough in my ability to judge a car's condition to trust my opinion over the opinion of people going off of details I've given.

i say if you like it and think its a good deal go for it man

    BTW early models FTW!
The guy actually has owned exclusively BMW's since he bought the e30. He had an e60 and an e90 convertible in the garage. He doesn't know anything about them other than that he loves driving them. He seems like the kind of guy who if anything is wrong he just takes it to the shop and says "fix it" without worrying about the cost.

What it feels like owning an e30:
