What's up guys as some of you may know, I sold my 84 318 a few months back. I'm back now in the market looking for an e30. I saw and I'm pretty interested in a 91 318is, but the title is salvaged.. Bummer! So my question here is what are your opinions or how do you feel about salvaged vehicles? I just want to be better safe than sorry that's all. And the guy said it's salvaged because the oil pan braking and insurance not wanting to pay for it because of the cars age, so they decided to salvage it. Anyways thanks guys!

I wouldn't care if it's salvaged, with the following criteria: I would have to have proof of what exactly caused the salvage title, ie pics of the accident and nothing fishy. The oil pan story sorta sounds like bullshit to me.

EDIT: especially if it's the lower oil pan. They're available brand new and are super easy to change. I highly doubt a mechanic would quote far over a few hundred to fix something like that. Ask the seller some more questions and see if he seem honest.

I'd be leary. But it is not out of the realm of possibility for an insurance company to total a car because of the oil pan.

...it may look good on the outside, but it has a dark history...

It's up to you if you can live with it or not. I personally wouldn't buy anything with a salvaged title, but then there's some people who wouldn't think twice about it. It's all up to you, but as another said, I'd want documentation or proof of why it's salvaged (if/when/how it was fixed), and not just someones "word" on what happened.

I mean you could definitely justify the purchase, it all depends on circumstances though.

-Do you see yourself keeping the car for a while? Keep in mind variables change, you might find yourself needing to sell it rather than wanting to at some point.

-Do you plan on any major modifications? i.e. paint, wheels, swap, interior, etc? Even regular maintenance can add up quick.

You have to keep in mind even with upgrades or a build, those words "Salvage Title" are going to glow in your for sale add, minimizing potential buyers. It's already difficult enough trying to recoup money invested in mods/maintenance for those selling clean title e30's, in your situation, that branded title alone could cause a nightmare and/or a financial swan dive.

It's not all dark though. If you have plans, intend to keep it, accept/recognize the resale burden...and of course if it's a good deal to begin with- there may be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Just my two cents on the topic though man. My opinion on salvage titles has always been the same, never changed and probably never will, regardless of how it came to be. If you intend to do anything with the car other than drive it and keep it stock or go full in track car, I'd pass.

I realize cars are poor investments as is, but picture two e30's side by side. One with a salvaged title and one without. They've both been engine swapped and have updated suspensions. The one without the salvaged title will sell faster and for a higher price.

What about an e30 thats hit a deer before, but has a clean title? The only thing wrong with that is that the hood doesnt close all the way it needs hood pins to help it stay shut, it needs fenders because the one it has are dented in some areas and has some imperfections all around the car. But its lowered on eibachs and bilstein shock, it has an is lip and clean sport seats as well as some headrests in the back. The guys asking 2000. You think thats a good deal? And its a 89 325i

Bought mine with a salvaged title for basically the same reason. I knew I would be tearing into it and replacing alot so it didn't really bother me. If I was spending a good chunk of money or was on a newer car I would certainly be hesitant.

Oil pan story sounds like bullshit. I wouldn't buy salvage unless track toy.
