Yeah i was going to ask that too. Cause i think people are forgetting that this engine is going into a Corvette, not an everyday point A to B car. And since we are talking MPGs. The LT1 and LSx that came before this engine has been known to get high 20's low 30's. I may come off as a GM fan boy, but GM isn't stupid like most people think. And as for me, i do perfer the older SBCs before the newer LS series came out.

26 mpg from a 450 is good numbers look at others. They have resorted to having autoboxes with 8 or 9 speeds that's getting crazy. These engines are rated at less than they have been producing just look at the numbers people are getting out there.
The old LT1's got what maybe 7 mpg in 60's thanks to carbs.
I'd take a new C6 Grand Sport in the carbon package any day so long as it's a fixed roof coupe.

The SBC may be overdone, un-original and downright sacrilegious for some, in the end nothings beats its effectiveness to provide acceptable power and torque for the price.
Now if they could only fix the horrible interior of the 'Vette....01/88 325is re-assembly required - Garage recluse - Parts pile growingComment

I would have to say that Chevy know's the pushrod v8 so well by now that it would be folish to try and change that layout, since by now its probably reaching perfection of that specific design, whether it be from the 1950's or not.
I also think there is defintly a much need spot to be filled (and you bet GM knows this) by a 32 valve gm small block.

You know GM has had VVT pushrod v8 engines for a number of years, right? I think saying GM is going to have a hard time selling a torquey, high power, high efficiency v8 is like saying Porsche is going to have a hard time selling an ass backwards drivetrain configuration. Yes it's not the most effective but it's been engineered out the wazzoo and performs amazingly.I like how they comepare it to the BMW M5 engine saying the LT1 is smaller and lighter. But say nothing about hp/lt or the fact that the BMW engine has great MPG.
Ithor way they need to move on from the pushrod. If they do not do it in the next revision I think they are going to be left behind, with variable valve timing, lift and soon camless valves GM is going to face a tuff time trying to sell a V8 to the general consumer.
The only issue I see is that GM isn't trying to develop alternative engine platforms along side the small block v8. If they do get regulated into extinction they'll follow the same path ford did. 15 years of big, heavy, under-powered, underwhelming motors.
I most definitely am a GM fanboy but I can appreciate anyone's technology and love to see advances. If Ford, Dodge, or hell even BMW had a small, cheap, efficient, durable motor that made a lot of power and sounded awesome I would've swapped that into my trans am instead of an LSx but it's hard to beat in any category. (Obviously not saying it's UNbeatable). The E90 M3 engine has no torque the LT1 has gobs. TQ is what gets shit to move fast anyway.hmm its also funny that the M3 they compared it with goes 0-60 in 4.8 seconds when its listed officially as 4.4 seconds also the new Porsche 911 does 0-60 in 3.7 seconds hmm i like corvettes but really only 450hp thats not much more than the current base model power plant also BMW pulled 414 hp out of a 4 liter and chevy cant pull more than that out of 6.2 liters really?

That is the way of the modern car. Shorter stroke, means more RPM which means more HP, the loss of tq is made up by the new 7 and 8 speed boxes.sigpicComment

I keep hearing smack about push rods but don't see anyone giving proof on why it's bad. It's got advantages. I don't care if its pushrods, 2 valves, ect. The LSx motors do what they are supposed to do and they do it well. I'm sure this will be a bad ass motor too.

the pushrod motor is a tested and proven design which GM has engineered to perfection but the technology appears tired and lazy imo. i guess to me it just seems that the big 3 german brands are spoiling us with lots of interesting, complex FI motors. (tri turbos anyone?)Comment
