What is "Dekra" on the DTM cars?

I'm thinking about getting some of these number panels that are reps of the DTM numbers with "Dekra" at the top. I figure I should know what it means if I get them. Some searching tells me it's some kind of German inspection and safety committee. I'm hoping there's something cooler than that to it. What do you know about Dekra?

On a side note, I have always loved the red windshield and quarter window stripe vinyl on the DTM cars. I have been back and forth on putting them on my car along with red grilles.

DEKRA is a company like TÜV for Germany. they approve alot of what is roadworthy/ allowed on the road, as well as do tons of testing on a bit of everything- not only automotive.

In Southern Germany, the TÜV runs what goes on in the emmisions/state inspections. There are Dekra stations also, but here in the dirty south, to have changes made on your car and approved (ex. s50 motorswap) it can only be approved by TÜV. In Some other parts of Germany DEKRA has the monopoly on it.

They were a big sponsor back then, and that is why they were on the stickers.

So to make this all short, it is the equal of a state inspection station.
