Your gauge issue is likely a bad SI board or battery. If you search there's tons of info on it. Welcome to R3V, I dig the E46 alot and the E30 looks like a good start.

I'll test the battery, the previous owner didn't do much to the car but put gas in it I'm sure and he had it for about a year, he bought it from original owner and I have all of his service records, from about 2000, passed smog up to 2010 on first pass, going to fix all the stuff and smog it. What he said is the fuse for the gauges blows every time, he puts one in, so he would stick a wire in for a sec to see how much gas he had lol.
