    Long Islanders ??

Any Long Islanders on here? I started getting into road racing (well I went to one track day.. but still) And I live on the east end of LI. We have NO racetracks on the island besides riverhead which is a small circle track, they run modifieds and legends.. demo derbys and stuff.

We have lost several tracks over the years.. Westhampton drag strip was closed in 04 and turned into condos, Bridgehampton raceway was a world famous track and suffered the same fate due to neighbors complaining about noise.. And Islip speedway (another short oval track) was closed back in 85. Islip was the supposed birth place of the demo derby.

Anyway, for guys like me, and some of you others, who love to drive our cars.. We have to drive through 100.00 of tolls, another who know how much in fuel, and hotels, just to get to the nearest tracks (millville NJ, Pocono, Lime rock, CT)

There is an out of use Government airstrip and Hangar in Calverton, NY (Riverhead) Where Grumman used to build weapons and space shuttle parts. Its been closed since I think the late 90s and its out in the middle of the woods with the nearest neighbors being about 2 miles away.
The town of Riverhead has been working on finding a use for the land. There were plans for a Casino and even an indoor ski slope which both fell through.

... Seems to be run buy a dude who turned a defunct airstip in dade county florida into a dragstrip and it became very successful. Hes been (attempting) to work with the town of riverhead on performing decibel tests in the area to prove to the people nearby that noise wont be a problem.

If your interested in having a nearby track to run your car on, join this website, also check them out on FB.. If enough people show an interest to the local government it could happen.

these guys talk alot about drag racing, but they do want a road course to be in the final plans, if anything does happen.

Liked. Oh man, how I wish the Bridge had not been shut down. It's now a super-exclusive golf club.

I wish you well on the journey. I grew up on LI and my dad's side of the family all raced at Islip in the 50's and 60's. I am in Huntsville, and we are going through the same thing. Drag strip is down to weekend afternoon operations only. People moved next to a 45yr old race track... WTF did you think was going to go on there? "our kids can't sleep on the weekends", oh no! complaining bitches with kids, the rules need to be changed to accommodate. Fuck you! We were here first! Our Autocross program, and venue we have used for 45 yrs, going to be ripped up to cater to the un-American import sports - Soccer, Hockey, Tennis. Cars and modifying them is a part of the American culture! Some communities get what an asset motorsports facilities can be. Most have too many complaining bitches running the City Councils in what ever direction they want. Sad

Yeah complaining bitches are the ones that killed the Bridgehampton track. It was bad news from the beginning with financial woes and the fact that people could just sneak through the woods and watch the racing without paying.

Funny though, now the same people who moved into the Hamptons and overdeveloped it, turned all my local shops into antique shops and high end cheese tasting wine smelling yuppie bars, and complained about the racetrack noise.. are now flying their private jets into East Hampton airport and driving the locals nuts with their noise

I just moved to Long Island, Massapequa from Miami. I really hope this goes through, Pete did an awesome job turning the air strip to a drag strip. They have big events all the time, and its just getting bigger.
I really hope this goes through.
