Speeding ticket: Cops allowed to park on shoulder facing opposite direction on hwy?

Just to make sure you're serious...you're comparing your encounter with a cop after going 20 over the speed limit to the holocaust? hoo boy -
Alright, I guess no one was really "sticking up" for the cop, but it does seem like most people are sticking up for the laws saying that I should just pay the ticket without questioning it.
Way to jump to conclusions here too.Leave a comment:

Wtf what's with the "Jew" remarks?
Jbird, you're rather well versed and come across as rather rational.
If this is your boyfriend....

So funny to see you jumping to conclusions, the very thing you're criticizing others of doing. I don't see anyone defending cops here.So funny to see so many people on R3V who love cops and stick up for them without question. I would have never thought that so many of the guys on here would be cop lovers! Overall I think cops are fine and they are just doing their job, but I still think it's good to question...
aaaaaand this is why no one takes you seriously. I assume this is your boyfriend. So, Jew, were are you going? Why are you going there, Jew? Where are your papers?
Same rhetoric, different time period. The questions the LEO was asking were no different than the Gestapo would have asked a Jewish citizen in the 40s. It's bullshit.
The class B speeding citation was all he was required to do.Leave a comment:

Na, it'd be another wrecked e60 post. ;) The e30 only goes out and plays on nice days. The e60 is the shuttle bus.

That would seem to indicate that the law is broken and does not solve the problem. It then simply becomes a tax - nothing more.
And there lies the safety question. The LEO had to preform a u-turn across two lanes of oncoming traffic [had there been any] to start following to preform his takedown. Are cops allowed to park on the shoulder facing the opposite direction on hwy? Depends. If they are parked, don't see why it would matter. If they were moving, definitely should not be allowed because its has potential to cause an accident. Maybe the angle he was facing had a really pretty view of the moon?Last edited by !Austin; 12-12-2012, 03:00 PM.Leave a comment:

I'm not exactly sure if the ticket should be lower or not. I'm interested in how the numbers of the fines came to be for different tickets. I wonder how much a ticket is if you run a red light or a stop sign? I also wonder if cops patrol highways much more often than in towns partly because speeding tickets are worth more?
I would also like to know if it is legal for anyone to park on the shoulder facing the wrong direction with no flashers on.Leave a comment:

I have been following this thread here and there over the last 2 days and I don't think one single person has defended a "cop". There have been people defending the law...but not cops in particular. So funny to see so many people on R3V who love cops and stick up for them without question. I would have never thought so many of the guys on here would be cop lovers! Overall I think cops are fine and they are just doing their job, but I still think it's good to question...
Mr. Burns and Earendil, this is the sort of discussion I was looking for. Thank you for posting. I wish more people would actually read the thread first before spewing their vomit words all over it and calling me a whiner and saying that I should just pay the ticket without question or thought..
I also just reread a lot of the beginning of this thread and I have to say, you obviously don't deny breaking the law, nor care to follow it in the future. Your argument is you want the penalty to be lower so (at least I assume) it will continue to be "worth" breaking the law. You fall right into the situation the law wants you to be in, break it, pay it and hopefully never do it again.
So to answer your original question, Are cops allowed to park on the shoulder facing the opposite direction on hwy? Depends. If they are parked, don't see why it would matter. If they were moving, definitely should not be allowed because its has potential to cause an accident. Maybe the angle he was facing had a really pretty view of the moon?Leave a comment:

Reminds me of a story I heard from a Surgeon one time. He worked at a relatively small hospital, and in a rare case that had need of two surgeons at the same time asap. He got on an empty freeway to travel 20 miles in his (typical) Porche doing near 100mph. At some point early on a "punk kid" pulls up along side him while he's doing 100mph. The Surgeon calls 911 and explains the situation. moments later a friendly state patrolmen pulls over the other guy while a 2nd one escorts him (at speed) to the hospital. The Surgeon broke at least two laws, but he had "purpose". Technically the officers still should have given him a ticket, and let a judge decide the outcome, but whatever :)
Agreed. Those little details should be for a judge (or commanding officer) to decide, not us. However it is our irresponsibility to inform those who are in charge of making decision, not as a way of dismissing our own actions, but as a way of keeping them honest. Officers in years past have done illegal things because they felt the ends justified the means. But not everyone agrees.the police officer has a purpose in order to maintain sanity on the public access roads, and enforce infractions to those who break the posted laws.
how they manage this, is entirely complex case of it's own, as there are many benefactors which can be used as a crutch statement...
position of the vehicle, illumination/placement being one of them.
I'd be right there with you :Dif I was a cop, I'd be a sneaky SOB busting Oregon's sexiest.
plus I'd rock coffee breath 24/7.
Every so often though I'd want to sit in a completely marked car with a sign a mile ahead as warning "OFFICER AHEAD!" in big bright letters, maybe even lit. That way, when someone did go flying by me I could have the smug satisfaction of not only knowing I was ticketing a speeder, but I was ticketing a distracted mutherfocker. I'm far less scared (as a driver) of the people going ten over as I am passing someone that is starring down at their crotch as if it's the coolest thing since sliced bread.Leave a comment:

completely agree with your statement, yet can be played off into a variety of arguments...
same reason a EMS/ERT vehicle can blow through traffic lights sirens blazing, at high rates of speed...emergency purpose.
keyword is purpose.

whether the cop had a disco show errupting with gayety within his cruiser, or was completely blacked out, doesnt' change the rate of travel the OP was going...
...however, to the argument, would of likely brake taped to slow down.

Yes, my party rants are legend-wait for it... and I hope you're not lactose intolerant because the second half of that word is dairy! Legendary!
