How different is this from what happens in all other parts of the world?
At the end of most motorsports events (even world class events with professionals)the drivers (those who can) do donuts, burnouts or pop wheelies and do stoppies etc. What's the big fuss?
It does get old really fast seeing donuts over and over again or seeing drifts over and over again but to each and their own.
Not everything everyone does is going to please you. It appeals to some and it generates a lot of publicity. A few years ago you would not see drift events on TV or any form of "street racing." Now they have a legalized version of racing for titles (Pinks on Speed..no gunshots or fights over lost races....) You see them drifting and doing burnouts at Nopi nationals or whatever that is called. They are now simply marketing gigs due to the huge audience.
Even on top gear you see them sliding around and doing donuts; to me it's a part of driving that will always be present. It's just being broadcast more on the public media.

They don't get out of their car and stand there while it does donuts around them, and on occasion, actually pays them back for the full throttle abuse by running over the driver :p

haha true indeed however these guys are just adding more "flair" to their acts and it comes with risks. I have no sympathy for them same way some of my buddies don't understand why I auto-x or plan to take my car to an HPDE.
It's no different than doing a stoppie or 12 o'clock on a bike....u could loose your life and yes the pro riders do that. My fave is when they started to powerslide the bikes..I forget if it was Aaron Slight or Kevin Schwantz who started that
Some rally car drivers did go as far as sticking both hands. They can't open the door and step out due to the harness, race seat and roll cage
Ya, I'm not knocking them, just seems like a strange thing to do. Hell I did my share of donuts when I was young in Africa too, just didn't have the girlies cheering me on, maybe I'm just jealous :D
Oh wait, I was never young in Africa.

"Michael Schumacher and the others are all white, they had advantages," Siphiwe says, "but we grew up poor- we couldn't get near a car until we were 25. For us spinning is a sport. We are not thugs."

If you're at a NHRA event, it happens before the race. :)
