I don't own one, but have driven a number of them. The NC Miata is easier to live with as a DD than the NA or NB Miatas. The early NCs have some engine issues. The aftermarket support for them is still growing, but not at the same level as the earlier chassis, yet.
Competed against a few NCs in a heavily modified NB. I was surprised how close they ran with that car with very little prep.
Comparing it to an e30 is a strange comparison. It's a far more modern car, easy to maintain, fun to drive, less room. You can stuff a LOT of tire under the NCs fenders without much modification.
I have seen an early NC with an intake and axle-back exhaust make 146 BHP, for reference. An NB can make the same power with I/H/E, square-top intake manifold and MS2 or 3. The shop I worked with in SOCAL was making more power in the NB using the VVT engines with the mods above by tweaking the step-in point on the cams.
If I get another project Miata, it would be an NA and I would do the VVT NB engine.
