Also get a 1.8 8v if you want a car that will got like 400k. The guy with the 2.016v i just mentioned above had an 87 8v first. It has 400+ on it and That damn thing still runs.

Don't botther getting an 8v unless you want to swap a VR6 in there. My 91 GLI was a quick car and handled nice with H&R coilovers but i still prefer the Corrado for power and handling (it is however heavier then the MK2's)
big mistake my friend 8V digifants are quick

coming from what is arguably (or was) the best handling FWD, all I'll add is that rwd is a bunch more fun. For a daily driver, the vw is great though

As a current owner of a mk2 8v GTi, I can say these cars are pretty fun little things. At least the euro 8v is fast enough and has great throttle response. It handles very nicely - very predictable behaviour, even lifting mid-corner doesn't upset the car TOO much.. Non-assisted steering is a bit slow for my liking, but that's about it. My car has been relatively reliable, aside from the gearbox blowing up last autumn. It has never left me stranded and it always starts the first time no matter how cold it is outside. Not too bad for a car made in 1984, it has its 20th birthday in march. :)

Anyway, I'm looking to sell the car this spring and buying a nice 318is or 325i... I like the feel of RWD much better.

my next car was gonna be a corrado g60 after my eta was sold, but i found my 91 325i 8) however, the corrado pulled like mad, even with 4 full grown men in it. liked the feel of no power steering, very predictable, but a little too strenuous (sp?) for what i would be using it for ( street use). my final decision came down to the shitty transmission that was in it. absolutely horrid at best. i think it was on its way out. that, and the fact that i was gonna have to rebuild the supercharger.

My buddy has a MK2 16v. I've raced him quite a few times and Its almost a dead even race. Rear wheel drive definatly has the advantage off the line though. Both, his and my car has basic mods. If you can tune it for cheap, more power to you, but I rather have a BMW.

Some pics of another friend's car. Not the one I raced.

This one is a little bit more Racer status
