    School me on S52 ITB's

So, It's not that an S52 doesn't provide enough power, it's just that if more power is available, why not go for it, right? I have an option to buy a Dellorto ITB setup for $550 and I'm curious to know what r3v's opinion is. I honestly don't know much about them; the guy says he saw 20-30 HP/TQ increases, and greatly improved throttle response (not much of an issue with an S52 IMO, but whatev). Would this be a difficult setup to install and get running, do I need to go to a standalone ECU or is it plug and play? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

lets see, to run the stock DME, you need the MAF (mass airflow) sensor, IAT (intake air temperature) sensor, ICV (idle control valve) and TPS (throttle position sensor).. among others, but that's pretty much it on the intake side of things.

find a way to integrate those into your system (meaning you'd need some kind of fabbed airbox), along with a bracket for the throttle cable to attach to the linkage for the ITBS, and i don't see why it would be an issue.

ps, you likely won't make any additional power (save for maybe up top, if you've already got cams and the mods to support 7K+ RPM). but it'll look cool, sound cool, and you'll be a cool guy for having an S52 with ITBs. good luck!

i have never heard of a 24v dellorto setup. there is a company called dbilas that makes a kit though. they also sell cams, but i don't think they have any software support for the kit. you can gain some power because you will obviously have less restriction into the engine. only slapping the intake on your engine will likely make less than 15hp. to see any real gains, you will need to spend a lot of money. cams(about 1k), exhaust(about 1k), tune(about 400.00)or megasquirt(perhaps 1k). the cams and exhaust can be found used at a discount, but generally figure about 3 to 4 thousand dollars for decent gains.

i have a friend in oklahoma that has the dbilas setup on his e36m3. otherwise completely stock. he dyno'ed his car before and after. with no ecu modification. the car lost 2 hp. after installing a tune(i don't know where it came from) he gained 12 hp but his gas mileage went from mid twenties to about 16. i think it is hilarious to hear him bitch about it.

so, in summary, done right, its great. done like my friend did, it probably isn't worth it.

aw hell, i googled "dellorto bmw itb" and i found the craigslist ad local to you which you are referring. that won't even fit your engine.

the seller is full of shit. that is a factory euro s50b32 itb setup. it can be used on an s52 but it will need to be heavily modified and re-fabricated. move on my friend. not worth your time.

compare the photos in the craigs ad to this:
