Alright, tonight I picked up the cylinder head that will be swapped onto my engine to replace the one with a broken rocker arm. Head was rebuilt only 40K miles ago. Cost: $50. 8)



But as I picked up my head, the guy who gave it to me was trying to clean out his garage, so handed me a few more presents. :D

First off, $70 racing brake fluid he didn't want/need. Is this good stuff?

Before anyone says anything about amateurs and racing slicks, **cough, Chris, cough**. ;) Don't worry I'm doing track school in the spring and am not allowed to use them there. After the first driving school I can use them, but not until I complete it. I will probably use them a couple of times for autocross, and then save them in da Mini-Barn for next driving school.

I know novice drivers shouldn't fuck with serious tires, so I'll be sure to get more experience before I mess around on these. :shock:

That does make 9 wheels and 13 tires in my garage: 5 'weaves, 4 Type T's, 4 Blizzaks, 4 ES100's, 4 Slicks, and some spare Michelin tire. (I can't wait to get Euro baskets! Need to sell Borbets first.)

Bill, yep, F-R-E-E. I was talking to a fellow CCA chapter member about wanting to find a cylinder head I could swap onto mine. I mentioned the trouble of finding a good one, so he just offered his for $50. :D

I think those were 1 set of about 3 racing tires in his cluttered garage. Lucky me!

Greg, yeah. He had parted out his 87 325i track car he wrecked. He had already made more money off parting it than he spent supposedly, so he was feeling generous. Not miss shifts, bouncin the revlimiter. :roll: I'm just going to keep it under 6700 from now on (of JC's 6900)

SRF is great and is $75 a container!!

Now the bad, has it been opened? If so how long ago? This stuff does not last long and if it has been a open container for more then a few months, it's no good!

Your best bet for good cheap brake fluid is Motul 600, it's like $10 a bottle.

Castrol SRF is the best stuff. It does have a high hydroscopic rate. It absorbs the H2O very quickly. If that has been hanging around a while and not sealed "airtight" I'd let it go. There would be a tear in my eye though...

I was at an event where Irv Hoerr (winningest driver in IMSA history) was testing his Gand Am Mustang and he had a rack with a dozen bottles of SRF on the side door to his transporter. That's more than $800 dollars of fluid at retail. Of course he does own Hoerr Race Products...

Good score overall though. The GSCS tires are great. Their characteristics on the car are going to be the the closest to a true racing slick of any track tire.

FYI letting them sit around for extended periods of time in changing temp areas is not good for them.

:twisted: Sweet. It hasn't been opened, or I don't think so. UPS man-handled it pretty bad, but I think the container is still sealed.

I will put them on probably late summer. I really need to clean them off, but he told me use a putty knife and a heat gun (which I should be using sometime anyway to get rid of my trunk sound insulation!) If it is a problem to store them outside, I can probably have my parents let me keep them in the garage.

My plan is probably use them on 1-3 autocross events, and then store them until another track school. Most likely next spring, but I dunno. They should last that much. 8)

The fluid: I need to check if it's ever been opened. I don't think so. Do you think I need it for my first track school experience? Probably not..... but I can use the fluid when I use the tires! :twisted:

I need to talk to my mechanic buddy who is doing the work. He should be able to come by and pick it up this weekend and have it in his shop next week. Looks like it won't be done by Wednesday tho, the CCA meeting. :( But I'll still be happy to get it back soon! I am very very excited. I just tried to call him, but no answer.

Oh yeah, and one of my buddies wants to buy the Buick. :D

Remember, expensive fluid wont make you have amazing stopping power, dont think it will make your brakes like a boat anchor.

Storing the tires in the garage is a good option, basements are even better. Make sure they arent stacked next to a heater or furnace. That will cause premature cracking.

Are the tires brand new? 3 auto-x's and a driving school is a little optimistic. Plan on 1, maybe 2 auto-x's to get the feel, and then use them ontrack. NOT YOUR FIRST ONTRACK EVENT THOUGH! Learn your car with street type tires first. Then move up on grip level.

Just checked, the fluid is sealed new. :D I will probably save it all the time until next year's driving schools.

The tires are not brand new. The PO said they probably had a couple of driving schools left, so I figured they'd last two autocrosses and one time at the track. Maybe just one autocross then.

Anyway, haha, yeah I am not even allowed to use them my first time at the track. I said that in my first post I knew better than that. But I will definately look forward to it, whenever. I'm looking forward to lots of things, like Driving School April 17-18 at Putnam! :twisted:

As for the rest of the parts, I can take them and might be able to find people who need them. Maybe someone in Chicago would want them, and I could visit my cousins up there and stop by Tire Rack. (I can contact some bimmerheads on Eutotechnik (Chicago's Euro Forum)).

Chris, good good. I just got called by my mechanic friend. His shop isn't yet free, but will be in a week. :D And propbably a week for the work to be completed. :) Then it is the end of the Buick in about 2 weeks!!!

I'm so hyped for it being repaired.
