hey guys just picked up my first e30 its an 87 325e i have had a few 240sx and other "sporty" cars and really like it. The down side is sadly i know nothing so far about this car. Looking to make a relatively fast daily any ideas that preferably wont break the bank would be great thanks guys. i like drifting autocross and turbos as most do. my e30 is currently running a little rough so i ordered cap rotor wires and got a set of plugs to try to clean it up a little and get it running good so i may drive it back and forth to work so i can keep the miles off my jeep and the gas.
    Cheers
    Nick

Welcome - the search function on this site will give you a plethora of how and what to do's. To get you started:

Change the timing belt if it is of unknown age
Change water pump if changing timing belt
    Check for vacuum leaks
Replace plugs and wires, cap and rotor

For performance, not much to do but add a chip, which is a must for any "e" car. Else, look into building yourself a stroker or full engine swap.

Now start searching and reading . . . but whatever you do don't drive it until you know about that timing belt.

Let us see what you have first. I would keep the m20 which is the name of your engine and add a turbo.

Make sure you work for a clean in the inside and clean on the outside look.

welcome! you got a diving board (the bumpers) eta (the motor.. aka m20b27)! woot. that was my first e30.

first things first is do maintenance and enjoy it. then fun, cheap go-quick mods are a chip (google Mark D'sylva) and shorter differential (3.15 LSDs from Z3's bolt right in!). with sticky tires, a z3 steering rack, and some suspension work, eta's can be pretty quick autocross cars.

Sorry to say but you will be spending more for parts and upgrades on a BMW compared to a Nissan, however, look at the vendors on this site and you can get some great deals.

If lucky, the E36 will die peacefully, in its natural habitat, and be given the prestigious honor of donating its parts to an E30

Welcome! It will never be a fast car, it will however be a fun car and will always put a smile on your face. Few cars have as much character as an E30. Welcome to the addiction.

this might be the wrong place to ask this but i would like to bench build an engine. i have seen alot of m20b25 which im guessing is the 2.5. Is that the same basic motor or if i wanted to do a plug and play built engine it would have to be th m20b27.

You can swap just about anything into these cars. I'm not the right person to ask about the plug and play aspect of it but I'm pretty sure you can swap an "i" head from a b25 onto your motor and have a stroker motor that revs to normal redline. They make decent power to from what I've read.

jeepy, build up an m30b35. its the 'big six' from 5, 6, and 7-series of the 80's. and totally beastly.

check out the swap forums here. they'll give you ideas.
