Oil fills the void between the metals, creating a buffer, if you will. When you get metal on metal with bearings, you get a nasty banging noise.

bearings don't touch. that's why you want good oil pressure, and why losing it is bad.

How is it not?

Because the oil system sends oil into the area between the bearing and journal.

Basically, take a ball bearing and replace the balls with oil. There is no contact between your rotating assembly and the bearings around it. This is why cold start causes most wear, because until the oil gets pumped into the bearings, you will have metal/metal contact.

Another reason why you should NEVER rev and engine on start up. Wait until the oil light goes out at least.

M42 actually wears out faster at lower RPM. In it's never-ending quest to mature into an S14 it craves the redline.
