My driving school experience saved my car, maybe my life....

Driving to Lawrence pulling startospheric speeds when an 8 point buck sprinted in front of me. Thankfully he didnt stop. I managed to threshold brake and do an under brake lane change to dodge him. I couldnt have done that if I hadnt practiced that in driving schools and used threshold braking on every turn of the track.

Another habit is the 9-3 drivign position. I hit the brights with my middle finger the second I saw him. It was a good thing too because there was a waffleswaffleswaffles or yearling following him that was spooked and reeled back off the shoulder. She would have either hit my side or the car I was passing.

Thank bob for the fury that is unleashed when all 6 lights are on. Between the sudden deceleration and the adrenaline I felt like I was going to throw up the rest of the trip.
    Im now E30less.

"It's not the deer you have to worry about, it's the kamikaze moose!"

      :?: Huh

That was fast, I just made it back to the main forum. No, a side effect of rigging up my sealed beams to have all 4 on whe on high is the fogs dont turn off when highs are on anymore.

Whoa, good save Ryan. But now you should go buy a beater, so next time that happens you can just plow head on into the SOB and keep going!

Yeah, If I had a beater I would mount up a 10 point rack and get a euro place that says DEER HUNTER

Of course there are no deer around hear... I could go for wild pigs though, and turkeys :P I just had to wait for 10 turkey to cross the road about 15 minutes ago

it would have to be a tall car. The scary thing is if I had squared up on this tall boy he probably would have just gotten his legs broken and then flipped into my windshield.

Besides getting to drive fast and share the track with race cars, what you describe is all what driving schools are about - making you a better more inteligent and much responsive driver.

Driving schools have also saved my ass on many occasions.

              Heres what Ive learned:
              Looking ahead, way ahead
Anticpation - this ones scares me. I know what people are going to do before they actually do it
Eye dicipline & omnicious environmenatal awareness - I look at everything, my eyes are always darting around, looking, checking mirrors, looking ahead
              Reaction Speed
              Car control
              Proper seating and hand position
              Focus
Coolness - I dont freak out anymore and over react when other drivers do stupid things like when they dont look and come into your lane of traffic
Maturity - I keep my fast driving on the track or on the autobahn

Man o man, I cant wait to take my 10 year old son out on track in 6 - 7 years. Hes going to learn to drive properly or not at all

K-10 can be a scary drive sometimes. Too many people who don't know how to drive going too fast. Add the occasional deer and you've got a recipe for disaster.

I almost hit a moose this weekend.

Coming through the fog in my grandmothers E36... See big huge looming shadow off to my left lane... Brain says: "Thats not usually there"
Same instant moose charges into my lane, slammed on the brakes, hit the high beams and swerved left around the thing.

It was big enough to drive between his front and back legs, and UNDER its belly

Needless to say, that was an exciting evening.
                    Below the radar...

Yeah Chris, those close calls get your heart moving. They also make me more and more interested in the newer braking systems. Im thinking 4 piston up front with larger single piston rears.

That is one thing those E36s have on us hands down.

Wow, ether that is all tremendous luck, or really good skills. But i always firgured that deer or moose hunting was alot easier with a rife; not your BMW.

Hehe, I can keep my stock brakes, I would run over a mongoose if he tried to challenge my car :P
