    What's the widest i can go without rubbing ~ assuming car has been lowered by lowering springs?

      I am running 215/40 and they work perfect, haven't noticed any rubbing or anything like that and it is on 7.5" wide rims.

          i'm on 17X8.5's with 235/40R17

          For 7.5's

          215/40R17
          215/45R17
          225/40R17
          235/40R17

          Depends on if you want to go oversized or not, what offsets your running, what suspension you're on....

            What is the offset? I am running 215/40/17 on 17x7.5 wheels et20. I have the H&R cupkit with rolled rear fenders and I still rub alittle on bumps.
            Also what year e30 do you have? The early model e30s have the higher fenders which means that you can run wider tires without rubbing issues.

              I'm planning on running 225/50/16 on 16x7 rims. Anyone think i will run into any rubbing problems with eibach pro and bilstein sports?

                again, you guys have to mention offsets. But my initial thoughts... Yes, you'll rub. 225's are a "bit" wide for 7 inch rims, but not bad, I would do it. Big reason i have no problems with 235/40R17's is optimal wheel offset, offset CA bushings, race springs, and rolled fenders. If you have none of those things, you'll have issues, my opinion anyway. If i were YOU, i'd go with 225/45R16's, but i suppose you're going oversized because of the tire selection...

                    You = rub. 225/45/16 ES100's rock.

                      with a 17" rim the correct sidewall size for a tire would be 40, correct? I'm looking to not fuck up the speedometer.

                        Thats because et20 is to low, 25-30 is perfect

                          The "40" is not the height of the sidewall. It is a percentage based on the width of the tire. So if you had 215/40-17 tires, the height of the sidewall would be 215mm x 40%, or 86 mm. I run 225/50-15 on 15x7 wheels and they are very close to stock overall size. 205/55-15 would also work on those wheels. You just have to do out the math.
