Tranny swap is done..a slight problem.

    I had:

    M50 engine (2.5 Vanos)
    m20 tranny
    m20 Driveshaft
    3.73 LSD

    I was swapping in:
    S52 US Transmission (5 speed from 99 M roadster)
    E30 M3 driveshaft
    3.46 LSD
    new stock m20 clutch
New misc driveline parts (guibo, CSB, etc)

I didn't actually do any of the work. I really wanted to help, but my schedule does not give me time to dick around with car stuff. I dropped the car off at a friend's house (same one who helped me with the M50 swap) and he went to work. Everything is in and the car does run, but I have two annoying problems.

    1. Shifting is very hairy. At first it was almost damn near impossible to engage any gear. I had to really force the lever into first to drive away. Once the car got moving, shifting became slightly easier. I drove around for awhile wondering if the fact that the tranny had been sitting for a year had anything to do with it. Things did get a little better. With the engine running and the car stopped, engaging any gear is difficult. However when the car is moving shifting is easy as pie. When the car is parked and the engine is off, shifting is butter smooth.

Does anyone have any idea what the deal is with this? I'm thinking I just need to break things in a little, but I don't know if this will solve the problem.

    2. The clutch engagement point is almost at the floor. I was told by my friend that I may have to live with this since I am using an m20 clutch with an S52 tranny. This isn't THAT bad but I would like to know how to get rid of it since I may be pulling the engine and tranny once again this summer for a "special" project. :)

Did you make sure that there is transmission fluid in the tranny? That can cause hard shifts and whatnot, or maybe even the wrong type of fluid.

As for the clutch, I'd suggest bleeding the lines, air in the lines can compress, and may enable it to be closer to the floor.

    Good Luck man.

Not being able to get the car in gear while stopped with the motor running is 99.9% of the time due to the clutch not fully releasing when the pedal is on the floor. This also coinsides with the friction poing of the pedal being so sudden.

I'd bet your pressure plate is no good.
