    Diving boards rule

On my way to ref a game the other day I got cut off by a Ford Escort. Basically she was turning left from the other direction into a parking lot, some idiot in the left lane beside me stopped to let her in so the cars behind her could go past, I saw the front end of the Escort come out in front of me and couldn't stop in time. Left side of my bumper hit the front corner of her car right around the headlight at 8-10 mph. Shit. Both of us are fine and drive into the parking lot she was trying to turn into. She starts apologizing and says its like her 4th accident in the past few years. Exchange information just in case and get on to inspecting the cars more carefully. Her car has the headlight pushed over and the entire radiator support looks like it shifted about an inch to the side. Both headlights are a little out of place, hood shuts but doesn't line up right. My car..... broken turn signal lens and a small scuff on the bumper trim. The impact knocked a coolant line out of the thermostat housing that I knew was loose and needed to fix anyway. Neither of us thought getting insurance involved would do much good and that was it. I felt so lucky to not have any other damage I didn't care if I would have to go to the yard to get another lens. If I had a plastic bumper, my guess is the headlights, euro grille, and maybe the hood and fender would have been damaged too. As ugly as they can be, diving boards work. Not too much to see, but threads like this always need pics.

That's what bumpers used to be for... taking little bumps like that. Now they fall apart and cost mucho $$$ to fix!

      Hurrah for diving boards! :D

And on a race car they are great for punting the odd Miata or Porsche out of the way...
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

            Hah, this is awesome.

Yes, OP, they certainly have their benefits and can be made to look tolerable. As a euro bumperer myself, I sit at stoplights watching my rear-view mirror like a vulnerable prisoner, it can get a bid old sometimes.

My super eta took a hit in the passenger side of the rear bumper. The initial impact wasnt to bad i'd say she was going a good 15mph or so. Got out see nothing on my car her POS honda's front bumper was caved where she had hit my diving board. The only damage was ,was the trim on the side where the side markers are got two deep scratch lines.
              DIVING BOARDS FTW!!!!

This is exactly why I didn't mind having the big bumpers on my 2002 and why I like having them on my E30. Also I'm apparently one of the only people who doesn't think they look like crap, so that helps. Glad to see it survived so well!

i hate how they look but they have saved my car, friends dad backed a minivan into the rear bumper and it just pushed the shocks in a quarter inch id say. front one did not work to well though, once again my car hit while parked on the left side of front bumper. must of been hard because it pushed the fender out. it looks like i started to roll it

I know someone who backed into a giant concrete column in a parking structure. Zero damage.

Full disclosure: that someone was me.

If you happen to see them I'd pay for shipping. Easier and still cheaper than driving 30 minutes each way to the yard to pull them myself.
