Lets mourn the loss of a state side 323 :(

I've been looking for an e30 local, and pick'ins are thin, so, the old ride around the industrial park was in order...came across a Bronzit e30 2 door with 2 flat tires. Solid body, only a little paint fade on the top.

Looked a little closer, no badge on the rear, so I was sure it was a 318, had brown interior that was nice, roll down windows, etc. Had Euro bumpers, but figured someone swapped them in. The shift pattern on the shift knob looked odd too, but figured it was the wrong knob.

I stopped by that place probably 10 times and the shop was hardly ever open...local businesses said he was open when it was cool enough to work.

Well anyway, last time I stopped in was two weeks ago...stopped in today and the car was gone. :(

He was there and I asked him about it...he junked it since no one had ever showed any interest in it. Then he went on to tell me it was a 323i and that someone imported it, and that he drove it into the scrapyard down the street.

So I went down the street to the scrapper, they sent it off to a junkyard.

I called the junkyard...they had no record of it being there but checked, and sure enough. :(

So...anywho, a 323i has died. I'm going to do all in my power to buy it out of the yard since it hasn't been dismantled yet, but, Florida's laws are pretty strict on, once they're in, they're in. So we'll see.

But, whats worth grabbing if my attempt proves a failure? Obviously the bumpers and transmission...the m20b23 of any real use?

But...I'm about sick after knowing such a good car got scrapped even after my many attempts at buying it...ugh.

    Lets hope for a save.

    dammit!

the head is a 731 casting, which makes for a nice 2.7i. the euro bumpers and valence are useful, the transmission is a dogleg, grab the driveshaft as well if you find it. The diff will be a 3.23 LSD small case, which 2002 and e21 guys like.

Aside from that, nothing else is really spectacular. Some folks like the roll-down windows and the hole-free center console. The check panel should be all german, as well. The distributors are rare and parts are hard to find, so it's worth pulling out. The block is crap.

Next time leave a note? That sucks man. I've come across a few and I always leave a note or knock on the door. Good luck saving the bits.

The trans should just be a OD box as standard, likewise the diff will usually be a 3.46 and it will be a medium case 188mm diff, not a small case one.
Just a little project im working on

Motor wouldn't be to bad to bad to get, i wouldn't mind having a spare for my 323 with dogleg

I'd want the head, intake, valve cover, and euro bumpers!

I'm scoping it out tomorrow. As I said, I'm going to try and pick up the whole car, if not I'll get some pieces. Probably going to keep most of it for my own e30....whenever I get another...lol

But, I wanna save her. Didn't come all this way to die in a junkyard in Port Toilet, Florida...haha.

Oh, and I left my number with two neighboring businesses who said they'd give it to him, but...the messages were never relayed :(

This is not true of 323i's I've seen in the states.

Good luck! A car like that is worth the effort if even to save the rare non-US spec parts.

Tried like hell to buy it but it has already been assigned a certificate of destruction. In Florida, once that is in place, only individuals with a salvage license can posess the entire car.

Sucks because I gave it a good look over and it is pretty clean.

Anywho, got the bumpers, valance, airdam, one brake duct, rear spoiler, gauge cluster, wood shift knob, check panel cover, and a few other little things.

I could only find 5 gears in the trans. Idk why. Lol. Also it looks as of someone swapped a 2.7 eta engine in. The car is a 1983 built in September of 1982. Has the usual distributor cap on the front of the head and has the cold start injector like an e car does. The maf was missing.

But car also had rear headrests which I thought was weird. They weren't nice enough seats to grab though. :/

But I got everything else I thought was worthy. Even a period correct radar detector that was mounted flush in the knee panel. Lol!

Also had power everything and a digital two button clock in place of the obc. Ill post some pics tomorrow.

But now to get an e30 to help that one live on! All this stuff is going on one. Haha.

To add to this sadness, I looke at the mileage on the cluster (didnt even think to look before) car had 33k miles on it. Now I'm not sure if they reset it when it got in the us. But it only showed 33k and I believe it. :(

Only 323 ive ever seen had a med 3.46lsd. 731 heads are mehhhh okay. 885 on top is still better on a 2.7 block

I didnt look at it as they were only open half a day that day. Ill go back and check it out. I'm not really familiar with what the diffs look like in comparison to small or medium case, soo...lol. Ill read the tag though.

The car was built in September of 82. So is there a chance it was a four speed? I seriously could only find a normal 5 speed pattern. No 6th spot for reverse. Even all the way over and up, just wasn't there.???
