Buy a civic. I have one as a second car, '94 hatch. Stock. Plenty fun to tool around in, 4x4 suspension, no one gives it a second glance, cheap parts, reliable, excellent on gas. Best damn purchase I ever made, save mileage on the E30 and gas too.

    Keep it slideways!!

Werd. I've got to agree that a mid-to-late 90's Honda Civic is the best daily driver, bang for the buck.

If you get a 16v GTI, get the later model (1991, 1992) with Motronic fuel injection. Digifant sucks. These cars are a little finnicky for daily driving though.

Know this, however. Just as much shit goes wrong with MkII VW's as goes wrong with E30's. If you want something cheap and unconditionally reliable, get a Honda.

well that all sounds well and good but im waaaaaaaaaay too stuck up to drive rice. The thing i dig about the golf most is that its a hatch. But i feel i must drive european cars.

So because it's Japanese, it's rice? And you feel you "must drive european cars"?

Well, that's the terminal end of my willingness to be helpful. I've got all the convincing I need.

                  AGREED!!! Digi is the worst!

Nothing wrong with a preference for European cars, I'm the same way. I took it as you meaning that's all you would drive.

Here is my old car. I miss it everyday. It was quick, light, and handled amazingly for wrong wheel drive car.

I would go with a 90 or later car if possible, digi sucks, motronic is a bit more reliable, but not by much. My car had a 2 litre block with a p&p 1.8 litre head, motronic swap, TT chip, supersprint/tt exhaust, koni's... blah, blah. It was a blast. I had more trouble in that car than I do with my e28. Motronic seems very finicky with electronics. If the contacts and ISV aren't clean, the car will drive like ass, and drive you nuts. I kept a spray can of contact enhancer in the car at all times. A2's are pretty easy to work on, and parts are no more expensive than bimmer parts, check out www.parts4vws.com for an idea. I say go for it, you won't regret it. Look for rust in the rear shock towers, behind the gas door, and along the sills. I wouldn't call these cars stone reliable, but with proper maintenance and care, they will last you a long time, mine never left me stranded. Ohh, check the timing belt, as with all interferance engines. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions!
