    S50 swap vs cobra r

    Hi all,

My s50 swapped touring is pretty much done. Just working out some kinks before new pics.

My mechanic took it for a spirited drive the other night to see what was what.

When he got back he told me he was on the highway just cruising along and a cobra r pulled up behind him and pulled out to pass. He blipped the throttle and the cobra r got hard on it. He said he hung with the cobra for a good while neck and neck but the cobra slowly pulled away eventually.

He said the look on the guy's face, and his passenger's face was priceless.

Summary: s50 swapped touring keeps up with cobra r on highway for a good bit.

      What year a 93? I doubt a 2000 model wouldn't take an s50

Well he did take an s50, but after putting up a good fight. I didn't realize there was an earlier cobra r. I'll confirm with him

Those 2000 5.4 cobra r's are pretty wicked cars. That would be awesome if you cpuld keep up with it

You must trust your mechanic. I'd be LIVID if my car was in the shop and the tech took it street racing. Either way, that's awesome because those are some pretty serious cars.

There is also the possibility your mechanic wanted you to feel better about his work...

I'm not calling BS, if you have a strong motor and supporting mods the numbers can be kinda close given the weight difference (especially if the cobra had a passenger), but n/a s50/s52 e30s shouldn't hang with ~400hp cars on the highway. Being shaped like a brick is not our friend at higher speeds.

There were also a ton of knockoff bodykits available. If it had recaros, side exit exhaust, and dzus fasteners on the front bumper than it was real. I havent seen the aftermarket do a front bumper with the dzus fasteners, but they would probably be hard to see on a highway roll

I suppose it is possible he is blowing smoke but I really doubt it as its not like he did any mods to the engine to increase performance or did any tuning etc. he literally just installed the stuff I gave him. He was sceptical as to how much fun the car would be until he drove it.

He is very familiar with the muscle car scene, as that is where his interest lie.
He has an 800hp dodge challenger.

As for the specs, it would have been a weight difference of 600-700lbs. Not sure how much of a difference tht would make, and the cobra rs had 385hp, not 400. Again, not sure how much of a diff that would make.

He didn't come to me with a story of blowing the doors off the cobra, he basically described a good fight and respectable loss to a high horsepower muscle car. Again, the cobra did pull away eventually.

It is also possible that the cobra saw an old station wagon and didn't full get on it until he realized it wasn't disappearing behind him.

He said the best part was the look on their faces when they looked over at him haha.
