    A tale of two DD's

Not double d's...(tho that'd be pretty cool)
So I've been lookign for adaily with the following criteria:

    -Cheapish (under 5g's)
    -RELIABLE auto trans
    -air conditioning
    -comfy
    -fold down rear seats

I'm consideirng to daily drivers, here's the stats

    1. 1999 Volvo S70 GLT turbo sedan. Has a mere 50k miles on it. Been parked indoors it's whole life, and not a spec of rust. Owner has replaced the timing belt and the battery recently. tires seem ok. Asking $5g's. A/c doesn't work well (evaporator issue that's common on many of these cars). On the upside it has an AW transmission, and the engine has been proven to be very reliable (inline 5 white block with light pressure turbo)

    here' s the link

    2. 1996 INfiniti I30t Has 110k miles on it. produces similar hp, with greater tq than the VOlvo. similar fuel economy too. Owner has completed 3g's worth of work on it including, KYB's at all 4 corners, resealed oil pan, electrical fixes recently etc. (supposigly the repairs came to 3g's). Asking 4.5g's

both cars have FLAWLESS interiors and exteriors as rust is not an issue where I live.

I'm really going for the Infiniti since it's had recent work AND because it has far better reliability reviews online (with MUCH higher mileage). It's only downside is it doesn't have fold down rear seats for my snowboard.

OTOH, I'm leaning towards the Volvo since the turbo sounds FUN, and there's many write-ups online of ppl. upgrading turbo's etc. I'm just afraid of the oil leaks considering the car has sat for quite a while, despite having very low mileage. I also dont' feel like tinkering too much with whatever I get, as I just want it to be a cheap daily driver that's reliable

    thanks in advance!
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

the s70 isnt worth 5 grand. okay, while it might be with it's low mileage, you can def get it lower.

but the fwd whiteblock platform will be a trooper unlike the awd models.

        go for the volve!

I really wanna go Volvo too, esp for the aftermarket upgardes and performance, but I'm not sure the seller is willing to go much lower than MAYBE 4500 since the milage is so low. I'll give it a try tho...I'll make him a serious offer of 4. According to the VMR site, given it's trim, mileage and condition, it's priced correctly at 5. I'll still try for 4 since the a/c needs attention and it's been hotter than a SOB out there lately (which won't last long), but still it's nice to have working a/c when on road-trips.

The Infiniti is a reliable workhorse with fewer moving parts and no funny pcv system that needs attention. I've just had a terrible experience with an 04 S60 I had that ate bulbs and had a shitty supension that made the car turn like a school-bus and grind the wire on the inner wheel well. funny scandinavians

Ultimately, it's all abotu who gives me the best price, as I don't plan on keeping this car longer than 2 years. The GF wants somethign safer than the e30 with air bags too.

No e34's tho! it's outta my price range for a solid, well running example.

            Well, this won't help...

The most important feature of a DD is 100% get you where you want to go reliable running.

I had a '98 Maxima, very similar to the I30 and it did very, very well on my special no-maintenance for the DD maintenance plan. It was nice to drive, and only failed to twice in the 10 years I owned it, one bad battery and one bad alternator/flat battery. It liked to have regular brake service. I could never find a comfortable seat position.

I had an I30 in Saudi Arabia for 2.5 months and it was a nice drive from Bahrein to Dammam airport and back every waffleing day.

My brother inherited my parents '97 (?) Volvo V70, I5 non-turbo. His version of the no-maintenance plan is working well for him, but I never liked driving it despite the really comfortable seats.

went to see the Infiniti. Dude told me the ac worked on the phone. bastard lied by the time I got there and the ac didnt' work. He did a great job of acting surprised when the vents didn't blow cold. Also he admitted the rear tires were needing replacement soon, and it'll need brakes soon too

to top it all off he's not negotiable on the price which is 1200 overpriced.

ugh! freakin CL freaks, So far Lolvo is still in the lead

                  This or E39 touring

                  I DD a '99 e39 touring and love it.

Not a very big fan of Volvo or Infiniti, but I'm always weary of DD'ing a turbo'd car. If your choosing between those two, I'd go with the Infiniti

I totally agree. I mean it's just one less thing to go wrong.

OTOH, the white block engines have been around since the mid 90's with turbo's and most owners can easily get over 200k before replacing the turbo. I'm pretty satisfied with that.

look into a 850 turbo. Not the GLT. Plenty of mods to toss on and they avg about 2-3k in LA

Im still debating picking one up since I sold my other car.

Actually, a minty one-owner totally stock 96 850R sedan just came up. Auto and has all the bells and whistles too. Owner is asking a bit much at 7g's but it was owned by his mom (old asian lady who;s going back to HK). They are taking offers and I may offer them 6....116k miles,no rust or stone chips etc.

THIS would be my dream Volvo....maybe in Canary Yellow, but yeah, I'd be cool with this

A GLT S70 has the low pressure turbo. Just not as powerful as the hpt model (190hp vs 222ish) The R has like 250

I dont' blame you, the boxy styling is very e30esque! One of the main reasins why I'm considering it over so many other cars in my price range

                            Ugh! No Lolvo for me!

After two anal-retentive accountant sellers who are asking WAAAAYYY too much for crap cars with high mileage, I'm done!

Gonna look at a cheap Focus or something with all the options. I just need somethign for commuting in crawling stop and go traffic.

                            thanks for the input guys!
