Re-registering a vehicle in Baltimore County

    Hi Everyone,

I was hoping someone here would be somewhat savvy with the MVA here in MD - about two years ago I returned the plates on my car and cancelled the insurance due to the fact that I had big plans for the car and didn't want to pay for insurance while the car was in progress.

Finally, I've got about a month until my e30 will be ready for the road - how should I go about re-registering it I'm not going to be slapped with ridiculous fines for keeping the car unregistered will I? I've thought about telling the MVA that I sold/rebought the car or had it in storage or something.... never done this before. Hoping someone could help out!

Not in your state but I don't think they will fine you for having it unregistered. As an example a lot of old cars sit out on people's property unregistered and without title and can be re-registered. I don't think you should have any problems and I don't think you need to give them any excuse either. As long as you have proof of ownership you should be fine

Then again I've never done this so I could be talking out my ass. Good luck

I live in Harford county and have a simular situation. My red e30 which was last registered in NJ before I moved to MD hasn't been registered in years. I let the NJ registration lapse because i'm doing an engine swap and it hasn't been drivable since then so I haven't registered it in MD yet. Now my situation will probably be a little different since when I go to register it I believe they will just need the title as if it was a new-to-me car, I doubt they would ask for a NJ registration paper since not even all states handle registrations the same way.

Re-registration shouldn't be any problem at all if you turned in your tags like you said you did.

Get the car insured first. Then fill out the application for tags (get form from MVA website). Go to MVA with insurance card, registration application, and your Maryland vehicle title. Take a number and wait. Then wait some more. Pay stupid amount of money, and walk out with tags and registration card. Do it in person in case there are questions. Read the MVA FAQ beforehand. Be sure to get Historic tags (no inspection, lower fees).

I have found one of the ten minute tag and title joints is a lot quicker and easier to deal with than actually going to the mva... I would recommend using one of them... On a side note when I registered my euro e23 the ten minute place could not help me because the euro vin number goes through the computer as invalid... So I went to the actual MVA, again it would not work, a manager came over and asked what the problem was... I told her it was a car from Germany with a European VIN she seemed happy with that response and over rode the system, gave me my plates and sent me on my merry way.
