OP - I own a 1987 944 - not the turbo mind you. I have found them more complicated that the E30 and they require more in the way of specialty tools. The timing belt tool alone is nearly $600! Fun little car though. If I were to trade my 318is for a 944 - I'd be looking for a 944S turbo model with all the preventatives done and a stack of receipts. Parts are much more expensive than with BMW (in my opinion).

I have a friend who has a turbo 944, he hates it so damn much, parts are crazy expensive and everything is so hard to get to

the early 924 were based on Audi 100 ls engines ( and they were junk) The later 87 924 he is talking about has the early 944 engine in it...Pro and Cons way them both.... Your insurance will go up for sure.... 73/74 914 2.0 ltrs were the best of 4 cylinder poorman Porsche's...But stick with the E30... your wallet will thank you for it !

We have a customer with two 944Ts. An 87 and 88. One will come in for something....then the next week the other will come in for the exact same problem.

I like the looks, kinda like a widebody RX7, but I would rather replace apex seals than do anything on a 944.

Funny - with my insurance company this car is cheaper than my 318is!

Personally I think the 914 isn't as good as the 944 - all my buddies who have the 914 complain about them endlessly.

Definitely don't trade for a 924, as everyone else said they are shite. While I like the 944 turbo in principle, I have driven a well sorted stock one and wasn't impressed. It was slower than I was expecting and I didn't care for the feel at all.

I also think that the 914/944/S/T could be bought for $2500 - 8000 easily (Seattle, WA craigslist data) depending on the model and condition of the car. I know the market for E30's is crazy but you could easily get a premium in a trade situation and end up with a "more valuable" car. I put more valuable in quotes because each enthusiast needs to determine what they like and how much they'd pay to get the right vehicle.

My machinist buddy said the same thing. He thinks that if I pull the 944 motor I should swap in an LS1.

Since my kid drives this. No.

You can put basically any engine in them since the trans is in the rear, like in a 'Vette.

Do a Volvo B230 swap for your kid.

944 is a transaxle?? are you sure?

Edit: I ask because I thought otherwise, but I really don't have a lot of knowledge on them. I know it was front engine I figured it was setup front engine/tranny.
