    School me on mk2 golfs

HAY GUISE, so, i'm thinking about buying a 91 mk2 golf gtd with 200k miles. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about how they handle and all of that driving stuff.

Dude is asking 850 euros (like 1100 dollars), everything works, no rust, no oil leaks, the car just needs a timing belt, front brake pads, a metal coolant pipe and eventually a repaint.

    Said car,

looks just like this under the hood

Your best bet is to ask this same question on the VWvortex forum. I've always liked vw myself and wouldn't shy away from a mk2 golf.

Gtd??? Like gti with a diesel mother? That's so sweet I've only seen one ever. If your looking for speed...don't buy a diesel.

Handling wise, a friend of mine has a mk2 jetta on racelands and it handled very well. He swamped in a aba (mk3 2.0) and its a very funny (very unreliable) little car.

Love the intercooler setup on the GTD.

You can see in my signature I have a little experience with Mk2s. I will say that they are generally well engineered, well put together cars that are a ton of fun to drive and great to work on. Obviously they came in a large number of varieties, tailored to different purposes. Similar to BMWs, parts swapping with the VW family is easy to do and common.

Before lots of other folks throw in their two cents on reliability (since everybody seems to have owned an unreliable VW or knows somebody that did), let me say this: just like ANY OTHER CAR, if they were well maintained previously and they continue to be well maintained, they are reliable trustworthy cars. If they're abused and neglected, as too many have, than yes, they can be unreliable. That's true for any machine.

I would LOVE to have another mk2. It was my first car and my first love.

since I've started working at an Audi/VW dealership, I've grown to like these cars. I say go for it.

We didn't get the GTD here in the states, but they are known to be a good little motor. Not the speediest of things, but quite solid. They can also be tuned to get a bit more out of them. As for handling, a suspension upgrade (cup kit or coilovers) and some thicker sways will do wonders for the handling. My 2nd mk2 (92 gli) had an h&r race cup kit and h&r sways and was, hands down, the best handling car I've ever driven. I would never daily something like it... again, but it was fun to drive!

Its very likely rusting somewhere, you just cant see it.

Other than the FWD and the engines facing the wrong way, I love VW's especially the old ones they dont have as many stupid problems. I've blown at least two ignition coils on my parents 02 GTI. That seems like a fair price for a fun little diesel like that.

That looks like a cool car, I'd buy it for sure.

Question: did VW and Audi share anything at that time?

I had a 90 MK2 GTi and it handled awesome on Bilstein Sport shocks and springs. Only other handling bit I had was a strut bar. Had it from new to 175K and it never gave me any serious problems other than a slow head gasket leak that I fixed as preventive maint.

That there MK2 that you are looking at is of the more recent facelift which most perfer so you have a handsome model. I'd go for it.

I had a 89 gulf and also a 91 diesel Jetta back in the day. Like them both very well, nice reliable cars overall.

Great cars. Friend of mine had one with a decent bit done to it. It was quick, handled well and was practical. It however started rusting badly and he sold it. Similar feel to an E30 in that 80's/90's fun small car kind of way.

Ahhh, memories. Drove and rode around Germany in a mk2 GTD in Summer of 89. Was great on autobahn, and thrifty. Looks like a bargain at that price.
