    how to clean intake ports?

I pulled the whole intake manifold off my 928 last night, and WOW it was damn dirty. I wanted to clean the whole thing up including the ports, but am not quite sure how to go about it.

I noticed that all the valves on the passenger side of the motor are closed, so I wanted to pour some gas down in each port, and use a tooth brush to scrub all the dirt off. Then, suck all the dirty fuel out, and dry everything off. Next, i would put a wrench on the crank bolt, turn it a bit so the driver-side valves close, then repeat. Does this sound like a good idea? Any better ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

GAsoline would be a great solvent for that.

Just make sure to let it sit in the sun for a long time afterwards.

a better idea is to get the head rebuilt. to clean off all the crap on the back of the valves run a take full of Techron through the system. you can also use some sea foam to clean out the intake or just take some degreaser and a pressure washer.

goto any machine shop that offers Hot Tanking service. Ask them to leave it in the tank for a day. It will be immaculate when it comes out. Shouldnt cost any more then $20.

hot tanking would be a great idea.... but not if it is aluminum, the solvens in the hot tank can dissolve the aluminum.... gasoline would be a good solvent, and would work... but the best way to do it desides rebuilding the motor/head would be to go to a professional and have him media blast the motor.... what they do is take walnut shells (hardest wood known) and gind them up as fine as very very fine sand, and spray a little bit inside the intake manifold..... the wood will not damage the machined surfaces, and will all eventually get burned out, this procedure is quite expensive, but well worth the results, and less expensive than a complete disassembly if the only problem is the carbon build up

well, the motor isn't comming out of the car, and the heads are staying in-tact. This is meant to be a pretty low-budget operation.

I just went to all the cylinders that had closed valves, poured gas in, and used a tooth brush to clean the port walls. I then used a pump to pump the fluid out. I'll leave the ports overnight to dry, then blow out all the extra debris.

I'll probably pickup a hair-dryer or something, so when i turn the crank to open the other valves, i can clean them out and dry them faster.

so far, i've test fitted all the parts and it seems like everything should work. The intake manifold will need to be machined a little bit since my block is slightly different than the S4 this manifold was made for. I've got to clean up my fuel injector rails and some other misc parts to prepare for powder coating. Also need to install the RRFRP, and convert to electric fans.

hmm, i remember hearing about somebody who left the head on and hooked up their intake to a bag of sand, kinda like sand blasting......

Note: I did not say to do this, as I also heard the results.
