I own both....the E30 is definitely better build, easier to work on, and the interior (besides the dash) is better quality

The E36 (I would definitely get a M3) interior plastics (especially on the doors) looks better, but is stil shitty quality. I think the maintenance is pretty easy....if you can do a headgasket change, then I think you are good to go for most maintenance.

Bottom line, I would go with whichever vehicle has been better maintained. Both have its pros and cons.

My opinion may be a little biased, but e36s look like what I see in my toilet before I flush. e30>e36. Q.E.D.

I DD a 98 328i. Not a bad car, we all know the engines are sturdy. Mechanically they are solid, my fiance got this one with 75k. Now we're at 120k and it is starting to get cat codes every once in a while, but all I've done to it otherwise is a rear wheel bearing a set of brake pads and a filter housing gasket. It is plenty quick for a beater, very comfortable but still fun to drive, and get ~27mpg average with me driving. This one has premium sound so it will bump some jams too.

1995 and back e36s are garbage fit and finish, so I would steer clear (I say this owning an 1995 M3. Interior sucks donky balls.
                    Agreed 100%

E30's have nicer interiors; that having been said the e30 I drive now got its dash sawzalled out.

Have owned 4x E36's - every single one was a 97 M3 or 98 M3. Both sedan and coupe is nice; Sedan is a bit stiffer on track.

1995 E36M does not seem very enticing to me; besides for the LSD capsule bolts falling out.. and the smaller engine....and the lack of ball joints in a few rear suspension positions....

the Later model s52 engine (96-99) e36M got a bunch of nice things updated in the chassis besides the engine; the complete footwork is changed and upgraded; geometry of suspension is also not shared with normal E36 as the 95 has in the front.
