    Just sayin

Sounds like you made a good decision to skip it...

Its so hard to complete large projects right as life throws a lot of curveballs that easily derail/delay them.

yea I agree.. it was an impulse thing I'm glad i made this thread cause i probably woulda started begging my buddy to let me pull the motor if i didn't

My ultimate goal is S50 or m30 my decision is up in the air at the moment.. I am the previous owner of a 95 m3 in near mint condition with low miles, I drove a 535i before i bought the e30 and the m30 has some balls it would easily keep up with a 95 m3 .. this is why my motor swap choice is between these two motors.. i was just thinking about the 5.0 cause it's easily available. But naturally i want to keep the powerplant BMW

I'm leaning more towards an m30 at the moment because i feel like parts will be cheaper and the swap would be easier then again i could be wrong...

While I enjoyed my 5.0 E30, and had the swap done and running within a week...

At the time I was working for myself and had a fully equipped shop at my disposal along with 10 years experience as a tech.

In the end, I only kept the car for a few months, because it was my DD.

So there alone, if it's your DD, 5.0 is not a good idea unless you are very young and truly don't care. I'm pushing 30 myself, and the noise and various discomforts that came with the car made me hate it as a DD. Though, it was fast as hell!

It's funny that you say that because yes it's currently my DD, I am pushing 30, and after replacing my leaky cat, I feel like i'm in heaven when I drive the car now, due to how nice and quiet and comfortable it is. So yea, i'm gonna skip the 5.0 lol. Plus, my buddy was getting something like 19 mpg highway i think. I do like the m20s 25-28 mpg highway.

For the record, I feel fully confident in being able to do this or most any common engine swap into my e30. It would probably take me a while and i'm sure i'd have a hell of a time, But it would eventually be completed in full. I am not a quitter, I am very persistent, I have replaced motors before, I have rebuilt motors before, I've worked in independent repair shops as well as corporate repair shops and I graduated from Uninary Tract Infection school AKA UTI back in 2005. I graduated at the top of every class. Received directors list and student of the course awards in almost every class.

Don't get me wrong UTI was a complete and utter waste of money. They cared more about whether shirts were tucked in then what they were teaching us, It really was a joke. I knew most of what they tried teaching before i attended other than the theory. I would have been better off spending the 30 grand on a shell, a motor and a fuck ton of tools but whatever..

i have automotive experience even though i make plastic bottles now and sold the majority of my tools like a fucking retard. But, people do stupid shit sometimes.

          You live and you learn.

QFT I started attending UTI down in Charlotte back in '05 and quickly caught onto their bullshit. The fact that I couldn't have long hair, even secured behind my head (had dreads past my shoulders) and the whole uniform thing really pissed me off. Learned more working in my driveway than half the kids took away from that place. Luckily I bounced out within a month for other collegiate pursuits.

Anyway I'm steaming on my way to 29 and have retired the e30 as a daily. I think you should look into that as a possibility. Don't grab a beat $100 car, but get some $ saved, get new DD then have some fun with the e30! I'm keeping mine mild with a 2.7i and some personal flourishes but have been real temped for something bigger and badder since its all apart.

5.0 is a monster swap and that will be some hell on wheels. I've been in a properly done m30 and that thing is fun as hell! Also taken out in an m60 swap and that was wild, felt surreal actually. Next ride is going to be an s62 swap that should be getting finished up here real soon....

How much do they want for the motor? Don't get me wrong, 5.0 swaps are sweet, but look at your options. I was well on my way to doing this exact swap but changed directions.

If this is your first swap of this magnitude and you don't have a shop or tools, I would keep your pants on and start working at finding a location that has a place that you can keep a torn apart car at. As far as tools, there is nothing quite like having the proper tools to do the job. People jimmyrig projects a lot to get them done, but you do to much of that it's just going to burn you out.

It is not the only 5.0 out there, and in my opinion if you are going to do any kind of domestic swap I wouldn't go with the 302 anyways, I would start with an lsx based setup. Now don't freak and say there is no way you could afford it, the lsx motors are used in a WIDE range of vehicles. I bought a full running motor, with harness and ecu for $400 that came with a boat load of extra parts. It's the 5.3 version of the popular ls1 that came in the camaros and trans ams. base line power you're already over the 302, and these motors unlock serious ponies with very minimal upgrades. not to mention if you haven;t ever worked on one, they are designed a MILLION times better then the ford motor. so easy, many factory reusable gaskets. Cam replacement without haveing the pull the heads and lifters. Awesomeness.

I'm all for crazy swaps, but make sure you are setup first, or it'll probably turn into a half torn apart car that will sit for a long time......

the motor would have been dirt cheap if not free.. but the car was sold today for a grand anyway. Another BMW engine will replace the m20 at some point when i'm ready most likely an m30

Yea UTI, Do not go lol I've told everyone that's ever asked.

I certainly plan to retire the e30 as a DD, once i decide to take on a larger project whether it be body work/paint or heart transplant, Both will be getting done. not sure in which order, still finishing up whats left of the maintenance that has been neglected for years. I really need something good in the snow I'd like to get another wrangler or an e30 ix lol
