Wow, I would have expected this type of elitism on bf.c, but I've always considered r3v a better, more sane groups of enthusiasts. Everything everyone has said in this thread can be applied to every build genre. I will use my own car as an example... I'm not sure of his intentions, but based on the mods it was either for track or drift. Let me list some of the mods my car came with and have since been addressed/changed.
1 - headers/straight exhaust - apparently it was too difficult to get the bottom bolts tightened, so they were only hand tight and leaking. the attempt to attach said headers to the remainder of the exhaust... well, it was a failed attempt. the exhaust had separated from the headers due to the fact that they were held together using threaded radiator hose clamps.
2 - ground control coilover kit - rears were installed as I would have expected, no problems. fronts on the other hand, didn't bother even cutting off the stock perches, just slid the threaded sleeves right on over and called it a day.
3 - BMR R1 front bumper - not sure if the mounting kit was lost, or what happened, but how about just cutting up the front valance, bolt the bumper directly to it, and mount it back up. that's good enough.
4 - short shifter - let's just cut that fucker!
5 - smoked headlights - spray tint, no need to remove them, tape them off, remove the grills, etc...
6 - who needs an o2 sensor

Pretty sure the debate isn't whether Stancefolks do/don't do stupid things from time to time but rather over how they are so butthurt about not being universally embraced by the larger car community that they feel the need to write a livejournal about it.

I'm trying to stay out of this discussion, but you guys arguing against the article because you don't like StanceWorks do realize that the site isn't just about stanced cars anymore, right? If you took the time to read the website that you're complaining about, you would see that there are articles about classic cars, hot rods, race coverage, show coverage, product reviews, etc. in addition to the "stanced" cars.

I am amused by the article's implied assumption that the Stancefolks are only ever the victims of unwanted sneers and jeers from the car community at large. I and others I know have been heckled immensely by local Stancefolks for NOT stancing my/our cars to their liking. It's pretty damn funny actually, especially when they get offended when it's their car being made fun of right after ragging on my car to my face. I won't paint all S|W folks with the same brush, as some are genuinely good chill people. Some are just idiots with big mouths, microscopically thin skins, and crap photography.

I get it, not everyone is a track person, nor even interested in it. I'm not a stance person nor remotely interested by that subculture. I don't understand the appeal of ruining a car's usability just to shoot photos of it with a DSLR and post them on the internet. But that's fine. Others don't see the point in spending metric tons of money to go drive around in circles quickly for a few minutes at a time.

The article, as was mentioned earlier, is nothing more than a plea for acceptance by a large group with a strange victimization complex. If you want to be accepted, grow a thick skin and realize not everyone will like what you do. Furthermore, be able to take and brush off criticism especially if you're all too happy to dish it out on others. Throwing a pathetic hissy fit (aka...the article) anytime people don't jump on the stance circlejerk wagon just makes you look like a spoiled brat.

You have the right to do with your car what you want. I have the right to like or dislike it and speak my mind. Accept that and move on.

The bottom line of this is that it's no longer a car, but a piece of art.

Which leads to extensive photo shoots, huge ego's, and super thin skin. It's no longer an object, but to its owner the art piece is their embodiment so when you dislike the art, you offend them.

I'm not saying all stance people are, but those who consider it art are not car people.

The posts I've been arguing with have, for the most part, stated that "stanced" cars are a danger to the community because EVERYONE who lowers their car in such a manner cuts corners and doesn't do it right.

Instead, it a plea for people to open their eyes and realize that there is no right or wrong way to modify a car. If you truly believe there is, your opinions are misguided and franly, you're wrong. It's unarguable. I just don't understand the negative "you're wrong" mentality. Don't like stance? Cool by me. But acting like you're better than someone just because you choose to modify your car a different way is legitimately silly.

I think the people of Stance need to realize that the contention is less about a "correct" way or style of modding, than it is the purpose and methods that some styles have.
