    M40b16 finally stopped working..M42 swap?

    Hi guys,

I went dark since the leatherique restore thread - I've been working my ass off thanks to freelance jobs apart from my job during the day

Little 316i has been great - it took couple road trips and daily commute..for almost 2 years without any problem.

I always thought about the swap since I hated the engine - and that's why I didn't really do anything until I can afford the swap even when I noticed subtle changes that it developed from couple months ago.

Anyways, car overheated in uphill and I spun a rod bearing -a night before the Bimmercruise.

I have enough budget to afford M40 - M42 swap but no shop is interested in doing it(at least until winter).

Right now I have 3 options:

    1. Send my car to the shop and get M52 swap done
    2. Find someone to do M42 swap
    3. Do M42 swap by myself

#1 I can focus on my work, and shop said they can source all the parts - but budget is too tight(I gotta refresh suspension + brake)

#2 Cheap(er) labour - but haven't really found anyone yet, and shops don't want to do it - and I have to source the parts anyways

#3 No labour cost - I haven't found the place + I have no experience + I have to drop some of upcoming projects that I can make money off of

Right now I am asking some of my friends who has experience and garage - but they seem to be too busy. Honestly #3 is most tempting but my schedule might not allow me to do this..

Anyone in here ever did M40-M42 swap? or even M42 to M42 swap?

From everything I read when I was going to do this it's super easy. M40 comes out, m42 goes in, mount the ignition coil (or just do COP) and you're on your way.

How much is the shop asking to do the M52 swap? Dont get me wrong, the M42 is a nice motor but if you are going to upgrade you might as well upgrade to something a little more potent.

The estimate that I got from one of most reputable shops in Greater Toronto Area was $3500~$4500 and they said they'll source all the parts. It's definitely tempting considering how much shops in this area charge for labour.

Just swap in an M42. I'm willing to assert that could do it yourself for under $1000, and that's with all maintenance parts/gaskets/new clutch/mounts, etc..

Maybe #3 plus a bit of #2. Source all the parts yourself, do it in your own garage, but get the occasional hand from said friends and/or a R3ver in the area? If it's a R3ver, you might even find someone willing to work for beer!

yeah the swaps are pretty easy. id say just go for it if u can have access to tool and a cherry picker. see if a friend will let u borrow a spot in there garage for a weekend. my father and I have pulled an m42 out of a car and put another back in, that was refreshed before hand in about 4.5 hours.

There are lots of Max/R3v guys in TO. Give MaxBell a call and say you've got cold ones and I bet he'll be there in a minute. Tell Scott you have an E30 part he hasn't seen before and he'll be there even quicker.

I talked to my friend(offered free website design/development to him) and he'll try to convince his family so that we can use the driveway (they have 3 cars and 1 car garage with full of stuff)..If he secures the space I'll start hauling parts. I haven't confirmed whether he has cherry picker or not .. but he should have one.

Thanks for the encouragements guys. I'll keep you guys updated - I really hope he can secure the space.

M40 to M42 swap is VERY easy most of the parts are the same including the ECU and AFM.
I would do an S52 swap, because the M42 is not much faster.

As long as it turns the wheel.. M52 would be ideal but for me, driving M42 car was enough difference compared to m40 lump.

You've probably already found this but just in case you haven't, e30zone has a lot more info about a M42 swap, here's the link
