Is this car worth the money?

I'm looking for a new car and I found this one: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/4096018284.html

I told him I don't think it's worth $5500 because of the mileage and how the interior looks. So I was able to bring him down to $4800, but I just learned that he cut and heated the springs and he hasn't even registered the car because he didn't have the money and he has another car that he drives, but he claims he has the title and all i need to do is bring it to the dmv with my name on the title.

He also says it doesn't pass smog because it needs a new cat and he says he has one that his friend passed smog with.

When I asked him if the engine had any leaks or anything and if it's been tested he said these exact words: "Yes. Everything was tested and the engine was cleaned insided and out of any gunk. It runs smoothly. These motors are half million mile motors. They're amazing!"

This is what his ad says:
I have a flush clean title 5-speed white 1991 E30 318 IS tastefully lowered on new BBS RS rep wheels with new tires, clean paint job, new clutch, new water pump, thermostat, new center support, new geibo, new fuel filter, new Bosch spark plugs, and breaks are in great condition...
This is one of the cleanest E30's you will come across on craigslist! I baby this thing to ensure best performance. Selling it because I just started college so I really need the money.

This car has no problems and runs like a champ. Oil was recently changed, car gets roughly 350 mi per tank of gas.

The interior is in good condition despite its year; it's equipped with the sports package interior.

For any questions or concerns, please call/text me at

    PRICE: $5,500 (OBO)
cleanest E30 you will find on craigslist!

****The rims could be brought back to chrome if requested!****

What do you guys think this car is worth? I'm curious because I've seen all sorts of prices for cars in this type of condition. What would you pay?

Yeah I pointed that out and he got defensive and told me the car is in immaculate condition and he wanted me to send him a link of a cleaner car

I've noticed 318iS have climbed in price lately. However, this car is a better deal, in my opinion. 5SPD swap and cruise.

It's worth more than teh avg 318, but nowhere near 5500. 3800-4200 is more in line with it considering the details.

cut and heated springs..... pink wheels... IMO screams immature and he probably used to own a VW or hangs out on stanceworks (no offense to anyone who owns a VW or browses stanceworks).

Car does look good... but no where near 5k. especially considering your in CA... tons of good cars out there for the cheap.. atleast compared to other places.

I meant cruise as in troll for bitches. Not cruise control.

Not worth it... more mods more problems. Wait till you can find a stock e30 for cheaper or for the same price, buy an e36 M3. Picked up my M3 for under $4k. 8)

Stanced car = Run away. At least that's how I see it. I know its all the rage, but its the German equivalent to "ricing-out" a car. I call it "krauted-out."

The guy selling that car is delusional and probably hard up for cash so he is going to squeeze every dime out of the car he can. Which means he isn't interested in catching fish; he just wants to go fishing.

Spend $100-150 for an indy shop to look it over. Deduct any repairs required from the asking price of $5,500.

                              This.

Everything adds up to "would not buy."
