Exhaust leak fixed...WOW!

I was able to take my car to the muffler shop this weekend to fix an annoying exhaust leak I've had for some time. It happened to be the metal rings that are placed right behind the catalyst where it meets with the tail piece. Man, what a difference! I can here my radio now!! Jajaja I even sense an increase in horsepower...yeah right! ;)

Another thing I was able to hear was a bad rear CV axle.. :( When I make a right turn the clunking sounds appears...

It just never ends with these cars...

Really? Is there any symptoms I should look out for when the car is running straight that could point me to a bad bearing?

What makes me think it's a bad bearing is the fact that it makes the sound when you turn. The bearing is what is taking the extra load when you turn, not the CV joint. The best way to test the bearing is to get the car up on jackstands. Once you have the car safely up make sure that the handbrake is disengaged, grab the driver's side rear wheel and feel for play. If you have play there, then it is definitely the bearing.

I have to travel about 80 miles a day to get to and from work. My nearest chance to send my car to my mechanic is perhaps in mid November. Any serious risk I am taking by driving my car with these symptoms? I've read about Honda owners driving with a bad CV for up to 2 months but would like the opinions of other E30 owners.

Well I did the bearing test suggested but didn't notice any play. However, I took a look under the car and found this:



It looks like I have a CV Axles (both are like this but only when I turn right I hear the clunking sound) replacement project coming soon. So my previous question still stands - Could I drive my car under these conditions until I could save some cash to fix this? (I'm thinking max a month).

I would also like to know if I'm safe with the replacements parts sold at Pep Boys, Autozone or Advance Auto (We don't have NAPA here in the Island). Anyone taken this route before?

you can drive around for a little bit, if its your daily. get some cv boot grease squeeze as much in the boot as you can and wrap duct tape around the boot. this is obviously a temporary fix to postpone the axle from wearing.

Interesting, I stand corrected. I wish I knew how long that would last, but I have no idea.
