It starts right up and holds a nice idle. It needs a fuel filter and expansion tank. Both leak. No overheat though.

A clean non-swapped e30 will go for $3-4000, so a swapped one in rough shape is worth $4-5000 I'd say.

E30 prices are about double what e36 prices are. They are much more valuable to enthusiasts. E30s are project/fun cars, e36s and daily drivers.

Thats good to hear because I just offered the guy $1500 pending a good compression test (I'm checking that tomorrow) and he accepted the offer.

What kind of swap gets a rough E30 to $4-5000 in value?

              I hope you don't say an M50 or M30.

I figured pretty much any swap will add $1000+ or so to the price of any car, depending on the engine and parts used. Like agent said, you can't do the swap on your own for less than $2k, so...

Thats not a bad deal for 1500-2500.
It does have the dual diaphragm 7 series booster and master which is a nice upgrade.
Swapping the lock cylinders is easy just time consuming. The bad news is that on a sedan you need to remove the glass or have small hands a be a contortionist to get them I'm and out.

I have the same car (91 318i) and I'm preparing for a swap so it's good to get one with it already done.

Lock cylinders will be a bitch, had to do it on my 318i, putting everything back together is the hardest part

Lot's of zipties in that engine bay. Makes me wonder how hacked together that swap is. You're probably gonna have to redo half of that swap for it to be proper.

Considering the fact he doesn't know for sure half the stuff he has on the car along with all the problems you listed I wouldn't pay anywhere near 4-5k. For that price I'd rather find a clean stock or slightly modded one with money leftover.

well, 1500 is a great deal. even if the compression test isn't perfect, i wouldn't worry about it too much as long as it runs well.

Nice grab, I got me a cleannnn 89 saloon with bolt ons for $3500. $1500 makes sense, no offense but looks like the guy was lazy and a hack.
